Rob is right. And if you use a blue to take a rectal temp, you need to ADD a degree since blue tipped thermometers are calibrated for oral not rectal temps. If a red tipped thermometer is used orally, a degree needs to be SUBTRACTED since red tipped thermometers are calibrated for rectal temps only. Oral temps are generally a degree lower than rectal and rectal temps are generally a degree warmer than oral temps.
