Subject: Urine Temperature & Body Temperature

I recently had a physical for insurance. A female nurse came to my residence. She did the paperwork and then gave me a urine specimen collection cup with a heat sensitive strip on it. She said I needed to let her know what temperature reading showed up on the strip. It was well below a "normal" of 98.6F. I wondered why my urine temperature needed to be checked, yet my body temperature (regardless of route used) was not checked. Anyone experience this during an insurance physical?

Well folks, I guess it depends on who you talk to. I checked on an online site, got an answer from a MD. Was told core temps are "invasive", and that your urine temp can determine if it has been substituted or dilluted.
Any other comments though, would be welcome.

Core-rectal temps "invasive"my butt!!! We all know that core(rectal temps) are the most accurate temp because it is closest to our actual body temp. I question the accuracy and validity of urine temps. In my book that method of temp taking has as much validity as the ear or infrared, or temporal forehead methods. The only valid temp taking methods in my book are the oral, rectal or Axhilliary(under arm)methods, period.

The nurse needed the temp of your urine to make sure that the specimen you give is yours at that exact moment and not someone elses or excreted before you took drugs. The strip probably goes with your file to the insurance company as evidence.

That is fine- but as a temperature taking method a urine temp is inaccurate!

Kim is exactly right the specimen has a temp strip on it to ensure that you didn't bring in an altered specimen. I get drug tested every now and then since I am in a safety sensitive position. It is not there to measure your exact temperature it will be fairly close but shows the tech who takes the sample that it is around body temperature.

As I said that is well and good, but for clinical purposes they generally want an exact body temperature. Richard never said that the urine temperature was taken with a urine sample taken for a drug test, so I don't know if that' is really relevent.

Hi everyone-
With the answers given, again, I thank you all. But I got to thinking. Had I known the urine sample's temperature was needed and the temperature of it noted, I could have easily gotten around that,(I think) had that been my intent. Knowing full well a nurse was coming and at what time, I could have had a friend (Drug & disease free) show up before she arrived get him to stand in the bathtub behind a curtain, and when I went in the bathroom, (nurse stayed in the bedroom) he could have given a sample and how would anyone know it had been substituted?
And like Tim#2 says, "Invasive, my Butt!" referring to getting a core rectal temperature reading. Yes, I would not have had any problem having my rectal temperature taken during the physical.I'm a firm believer in this method, so had I had it taken rerctally, that would have been fine with me.
Thanks again everyone.
