1. Were your underwear left down or pulled back up while your temp was taken?
Always left down, and were always down to knees or lower. (I can't imagine how or why they would be pulled back up.)
2. Did the doctor or the nurses take your temp?
Always taken by nurses as part of vitals
3. What did the nurse/doctor say to you before inserting the thermometer?
Usually "hold still, sweetie", "just relax", or "this won't hurt"
4. Did the nurse/doctor leave the room while the thermometer was registering?
Never. I can't imagine this happening, either, because thermometers were glass and filled with mercury.
5. Was a pre-lubricated sheath used?
Don't remember such a thing.
6. Did the nurse/doctor wipe the thermometer off with a tissue before reading it, and did they announce your temp to your parent?
Don't remember.
7. Did the nurse/doctor hold the thermometer in place while it registered?
Almost always. My last temp, taken at age 12, was the only one I ever remember looking back to see, and nurse was holding it like an ink pen.
8. Did the nurse/doctor ever wipe the excess lube from your anus?
At the hospital I remember them doing this with waxy tissues, but at doctor's office, no.
9. As a child, did you ever refuse a rectal temp at the doctors office?
I was not given a choice to refuse.
10. What was the cut off age for rectal temps at your pediatricians office?
Age 8, but had it taken at older ages a couple of times, usually if I was coughing or nauseous.
11. Did you like going to the doctors office?
NO! This was the era of pennicillin for everything, so every visit was a guaranteed grand finale shot in the butt.
12. Did you mom/dad force you to let the nurse/doctor take your temperature rectally?
Mom never had to force me, because it was the rules that you obeyed what adults said.
