While visiting Spain, I went to the local hospital for a hand laceration. They didn't take my vitals, but upon entering the exam room, there was a large jar of vaseline with an American style rectal thermometer protruding from it. Needless to say, it wasn't used on me, and probably it was for the best, since it appeared that they didn't sterilize anything.

Where in Spain??? We don't use rectal temperatures at hospitals in Spain. What you probably saw was an axillary thermomether placed on a plastic can, to keep the mercury down.
Spanish hospitals are absolutely clean and everythng is properly sterilized.

I was studying at the University of Salamanca, but this was over 20 years ago. The hospital was absolutely filthy, and disgusting. The equipment was antiquated. I saw gurneys with old and rusted iron wheels, and the medical staff didn't appear to understand what they were doing. And, I'm 100% certain that what I saw was an old American style rectal thermometer that was placed in the center of a large Vaseline jar, covered in petroleum jelly, in the exam room.I would hope that things have improved since that time. I was very surprised, considering that the hospital was a part of the university's medical school.
