For the most part, the purpose of taking a rectal temperature is that a youngster is unfit for an oral temperature due to the possibility of a mishap while a glass thermometer is in his mouth. No matter how tight a youngster's anal opening may squeeze around a glass rectal t thermometer, the thermometer cannot break. As far as a youngster's rectal interior forms around the triangular structure of the thermometer, whose cold presence is easily noticed just after insertion.
As said above, the danger of breakage is mishandling of the thermometer by the user, which these days might be considered by some as a chemical toxic spill.
