What a coincidence, I believe that was the first AT40 show I ever heard. Like A Prayer was #1 right? Of course, the first show I heard in its entirety was the one where Rock On hit #1. The first few weeks I listened on the stereo in the living room, and my dad would turn off the radio or change the channel when any song he didn't like came on (i.e. anything with hard guitars or rap) I even remember the song that was playing the very first time I heard AT40. I just happened to turn the dial and land on it when "Rocket" by Def Leppard was on, and I listened to the rest of that show. I didn't even listen to a pop radio station yet then, my favorite station (and really the only one I listened to besides sports events on AM) was Star 92 which was an AC station. The only countdown I had heard prior to this week in 89 was Countdown America with Dick Clark which came on Sunday mornings on Star 92. AT40 was on KTAM, which was actually broadcast on 1240 AM, but because my dad had the stereo wired through the cable tv splitter, we got their cable translation at 101.5 FM. (That's why it took me awhile to find it when I tried to get on my clock radio in my room, because I tried to find it on 101 FM and it was only on AM on a radio not hooked up to the cable of course.) Also hindering me in finding it was not knowing what time the show started. I discovered that Countdown America ran from 6am-10am and it was a top 30 countdown. So, doing a little math, I figured if top 30 took 4 hours, then top 40 would take 6 hours, or atleast 5. So, since I knew AT40 ended at midnight on Sunday night, i tuned into KTAM at 6pm sharp. (KTAM was rock oldies then, they since then changed to adult standards and are now Spanish.) Anyway, no AT40 came on at 6. Just regular oldies music. So, I check back in at 6:30 just in case it started then. Nope. So I check at 7pm. Some other show comes on interviewing Heart. I start getting disappointed thinking, "is it not on this week?" I was just about ready to give up when around 8:05 or so, I suddenly hear the booming voice of Shadoe Stevens saying "And now, American Top 40, brought to you by.." I was so happy I had found it, and could hear the beginning. Ah, the memories. :)

By the way, as a historical note, Casey mentioned KTAM on his final show as host of the original AT40 August 6, 1988 (which also happened to be my 12th birthday heh heh) he said "your hometown radio station, 1240 KTAM, Bryan, Texas." I thought that was really cool, I have that on tape from when I taped the flashback show last year off KMVL. (before they dropped flashback :( )

Anyway, happy anniversary to Rob...and me too! heh heh. What a wild 13-year ride it has been.

later,

Jeffster :)
