hmmmmmmm....I get the feeling that people here think I wouldn't play it because of it's slow tempo. while that's partially a contributing factor, it's not the reason I wouldn't play it. it's the lyrics....

the woman basically confesses of being a international call girl, and regretting that she was one. lines "taking the hand of a preacher man and making love in the sun" and "undressed my kings" sure doesn't help, even with the spoken word monologue near the end about "paradise is a lie" people would likely pick up the wrong thing from this song in the politicaly correct and uptight world we live in today, and when you are programming for the lowest common denominator and are paranoid of pissing off even one person which is the way a lot of stations think, you avoid stuff like this, because it might be your head on the chopping block if upper management goes ape.

after what I just said, the ironic thing about this song is that it's one of my favorites of the 1980's and I dare say, of all time, because of it's message. I was caught off guard many years ago as a kid, hearing this on a AM car radio thinking it was rather weird and surprised to hear what the lyrics were. many years later, I would actually listen to the message, and admittingly, be moved a bit by it. It really makes you think. unfortunately, people would likely just hear the lyrics and be offended. how sad.

I wouldn't say that, as there is more then a few 80's hits that do "test well" which are of the same tempo...."baby come to me-austin/ingram" comes (pardon the pun) to mind as being close, and is classic AC 80's gold, but again, it's likely because of the lyrical content played during audience music testing (whatever was used in the 10 sec hook played to a audience!!)that likely killed it being added as common 80's gold. god knows everything you hear these days is so researched to death by consultants doing music testing (with the charts only coming into play as a possible deciding factor as to what exactly to test!) that anything hitting the air is almost guaranteed to keep a audience.

I wouldn't play it

their music "universe" (some consultant jargon there!!) is usually tight. I would be surprised if you had 600 cuts...more like 300 max. there's a reason for that....as said above, what "tests well" to avoid tuneout. of course, you risk "burnout" of your universe, but it all depends on how much 80's is in rotation, and how often you are doing 80's weekends. in addition, you have some PD's/consultants who have the mentality "you never tire of hearing a good song" so you play the same "good songs" over and over again.

my way of thinking is to keep your core known 80's hits that always do well with an audience anywhere. two examples of this I can think of off the top of my head would be 'girls just wanna have fun" and "footloose" (can you imagine an 80's weekend without em?) and mix in some lost/lesser known songs like charlene. it keeps the mix fresh, and you can feature it as a "lost hit". but hey, that's just my .02
