Subject: Ron, KAT, 2fish - #104370994 IS a 2nd gen black box 1860

Author:
Bob - I was right but so what, it ain't gonna be a bargain
[Edit]

Date Posted: 11:01:57 07/15/08 Tue

OK, the seller answered my email about the serial number. The serial number IS 207921 (all matching on parts) which makes it a Colt 2nd generation, Series F, black box, 1860 Army .44 with fluted cylinder that was made in 1980. It has the correct barrel address, Colts Patent on the front left of the frame, and patent date on the cylinder.

And guess what, the seller has now added this to the description: "What is the serial number of the gun? 207921 Are all of the parts matching serial numbers? Yes they are all matching." He should have just asked me to rewrite his listing from scratch and then put some good close up photos in there.

If you want to see what a 2nd gen 1860 army with fluted cylinder looks like, go back and look at this one. That's what it is, and it looks just like the one I bought and returned years ago.

If any of you are still worried, I will guarantee it for you. You buy it and if it is not a Colt Colt, I will refund your money for the gun - OK now I'm getting a little carried away (just funning with you worried nellies).

Unfortunately, It is no longer a buy, much less a steal. I threw a small bid increase in there thinking the current bidder would cover it and he did (proxy bid, who knows what his max is). It's already up to $280.

Check out this Whitney. Look at the rammer attached to the loading lever. It's not right. But, what did it come from? A Colt maybe?

Just wanted you to know I was over Fuzzy's house the other night. That guy is sick. I won't tell you where, but he stuck me with a nipple pick.
I asked to use his bathroom to powder my face, and he mentioned about some Goex in his bedroom drawer..? What's that all about..? He said it was next to his round balls. What a wise A$$!
I told him what a dirty pig he was, and he said, "No, really, it's next to my lube".
That about did it for me.
Think I'll go back to WAGS.
At least the moderater at Voy, brings me Joy!

Hey you Remmie range groopie 12-gun Yosemiti Sam smoke making, target shredding, stainless, engraved, blued, patinaed, oiled and ready to Pop basket case . . .

Forget about that ungrateful whore fluted 1860 that didn't appreciate my loving advances . . . forget about that Sig Series 1851 with no turn line on the cylinder that I just won on Gun Broker for $400 + $15 shipping,.

This morning I mailed a $201 Post Office money order for my unfired (supposedly) Pietta stainless Remington New Model Army .44 with target sights. OoooOOoooh, yeah that's right grasshopper. Uncle Bob just blind sided you big time! ! ! Never breathed a word about it, did I?

Actually, I was hoping to totally steal it at $150, but there was no way that was going to happen. Even so, $181 + $20 shipping seemed fair enough. Will see if it's a Remington you would want to name if you had it.

I never liked Remington's with target sights because they didn't look original. And I didn't like stainless for the same reason. However, for clean shooting and easier "dialing in" to use Thumper's phrase, I think this gun is potentially cool at a very reasonable cost. And that's what black powder shooting should be about, right Smokin'? (bet you want to see a pic when it comes)

[Edit]

Date Posted: 12:48:51 07/14/08 Mon

I'm going to repeat this web address for those who missed it in my prior post. It's a good reference with Colt Photos and markings.

http://www.thespiritoftheoldwest.com/Collecting-Firearms-Colts.htm

So I called the gun shop Little Crow Shooting Sports that listed the controverial 1860 with fluted cylinder. I was in a hurry to go out so I spoke very briefly with a guy who's name I already forgot (Chad?), and didn't even ask questions like how's the cylinder indexing and lockup. He said he didn't really know anything about these cap-n-ballers.

Here's what I found out:

1 - It was owned by their Ruger rep who got tired of it. The gun comes by itself with NO black box or papers. That combined with the fact that it has been shot and roughed up means it's 2nd gen collector value is in the toilet.

2 - It DOES say Colts Patent on the front left of the frame.

3 - I remembered vaguely that the fluted 1860 I bought and returned years ago had patent writing on the cylinder between the flutes and asked this guy to check. He said YES and I think he said Patented Sept. 7, 1860, but I didn't write anything down.

4 - He said there is NO Sam'l Colt signature on the back strap.

5 - I thought he said the serial number was 307,9xx. BUT, when I checked with A History of Black Powder Reproductions, it said that Colt 2nd gen F series with fluted cylinders were made from July 1980 through October 1981 in serial number range 207330 to 211262!!!

I am so senile I walk into walls if I try to walk and chew gum at the same time. In fact I gave up chewing gum because I kept biting my tongue. SO . . . maybe he said 207,9xx which would make this a 1980 F series black box fluted cylinder 1860.

Well, that's all for now.

Hey Ron, you had the only bid on that vintage C series (brown box) 2nd gen 1851 - GB #104393172. Do you think I could get away with the only bid ($400) on a Signature Series 1851? We'll find out tomorrow, but I kind of doubt it. Check out Gun Broker #104573649.

The color case doesn't look up to snuff in those photos, but I'm thinking it's probably better than the photos, because every Sig Series I've seen had good color case. The box is perfect and no turn line on the cylinder. So, if I did get it I would leave it the way it is for future collector value. Of course, If Smoking Gun wants to get an expensive 1851 and shoot the C..P out of it . . . well, I don't mind. One less clean Colt virgin isn't the end of the world.

PS: I REALLY don't like the Colt signature on the back straps of these 3rd gen Colts, but the boxes are great when in new condition like this one..

I got lucky at the shooting club yesterday , and ran into a friend that was shooting his 1860 Pietta useing .457 balls ..So he gave me a handfull of them to try in the R&S which I didn`t take to the range yesterday ...I only took a hand full of Remingtons ...thought they needed a hug after Wayners talking bad about them and all ..hehehe ..
Got a Question to Wayne and others that shoot 1860 Piettas ..my friend loaded up his 1860 no wads no lube , says thats the way he likes to shoot ..anywho he hands it to me when I tell him I probally should buy one , It`s one I don`t have ..hard to beleive but I do like the Navy better ..The question is I just want to know what you guys that shoot the 1860 expect for accuracy ..This Pietta shot 1 and 1/2 foot to the left at 15 yards and about 5 inches high .....ok I emptyed the cylinder at paper 15 yards ..he loaded it up again I took on the standing ground hog at 75 yards ..it shot perfect elevation at this range BUT ..windage was 3 foot to the left this time ..Also the cylinder binded up on the 3rd shot of this second cylinder full so I helped it index for the last 2 .My friend said no problem he just loosens the wedge a little and keeps loading and shooting ...Is this normal accuracy for a Pietta 1860 ???? My Navy shoots much better dead on windage and it`s made by Pietta also .
This morning I take the R&S out back for a little fence post assisted redemption ..the pic is posted below ... it shot much better , nice tighter grouping ..more like my Remingtons ..I will have to replace the front sight though ..who ever owned it must have sighted in for 75 yards ..( Not my way of sighting a pistol in ) ...Now knowing for sure it needs a .457 ball ..which by the way doesn`t shave lead eaither ,( chambers are chamffered ) I will order a mold to do some casting yet another ballsize .

The BP case at Kittery is emptying out. Gone: 1851 & 1860 2nd Generation (each under $500). 1851 .36 original. Most of the Ruger Old Armies. They did mark an 1861 .36 Navy from $4000 to $3400 (great gun). They have a few original 1849s for $3000 and up (one is cased, in mint condition),and a side hammer (Allen & Wheelock?) for under $1000.
There's still a few Italian deals left - a nice 1860 .44 that I posted about last week for $135.

SG, you jumped to the wrong conclusion on that Belgian Colt 1860 reproduction when you read the seller's "All firearms shipped to an FFL only."

Go back and read the rest of the line: "the only exceptions are antique or blackpowder firearms made as reproductions."

Relax, this seller isn't that uptight that he would require an FFL for a Colt black powder repro.

I have a Uberti 1847 walker repro and I plan on using an R&D conversion cylinder. Can I use smokeless cowboy loads? Is there even such a thing and can a decreased smokeless charge be used in the original cylinder or is it best to use blackpowder loads all around. I am new to this and am ignorant on the subject but have read these cylinders are steel with the R&D being quite stout so they are not as prone to rupture as the original iron cylinders. What about the barrel? I under the physics of pressures and limitations on these weapons but would like some of your opinions.
Thank you.

I guess since I'm so enamored with the Centennials that I can reason the favorite for me is that style of cap&baller. The Walkers and Dragoons are fine and the Navy is fine but the 1860 Army Colt is just about right. It could use a little more space for about 10 grains extra powder but I guess it can handle enough. Right Smokin, Oldelm Rem lovers, the Remingtons can handle more powder but.....They ain't comin out of the leather as fast and ain't gonmna point as well neither. ha ha ha ha Take that you dirt rollin mucked up blue balled(shoot blue lead balls in yer guns)duck billed Rem lovers. Anywhoooo......in a sustained use of the Army revolver it will be a service to it's operator longer and load faster than the Remington. The myth that the Rems load faster is sustained by people who deduce that fact without practical field experience or.....are predudiced about the Remingtons 1863 revolver anywhoooo and purposely refuse to recognize the value of the wedge and removable barrel with the mechanics involved. The sustained use of a combat ready cap&baller in the old days would value the failsafe mechanics of the Colt when the chips were down and there was no time to be foddling the Remington revolvers base pin and rubbing it with lubricant to keep the pin free enough to use the spare cylinders one would hope to have. That spare cylinder would save their hide from getting scalped by some of the fiercest warroirs the world has ever known. The Apache comes to mind there. The Remington was field tested and it's been historically documented by the Ordanance Deptartment of the U.S. Army, and the documents still exist somewhere, that it fouled terribly and the base pins were not removable after a very short time, one cylinder full of six shots, and caused great concern. That concern by the Ordanance Department caused them to choose the COLT ARMY 1860 44cal. REVOLVER over the Remingtons revolver for service duty. Sure the Army bought some Remingtons and issued them to the trops due to the strength of the gun and all but the troop[s complained about them. Little screw driver type thingys were issued for the troops to try to pry the base pins from the frame and even little brass containers for water were issued to drip on the base pins to loosen and soften the fouling. Anywhoooo.......base pins do stick in the frames of Remingtons and unlike the ficticious story of "Pale Rider....Preacher" using a blackpowder cartridge Remington revolver and easily loading it with new preloaded cylinders the base pins are a bitch to remove when the gun gets fouled. The Marshall Stockburn in that movie would in reality have killed the Preracher "again" with six shots to the chest(the preacher had six scars put there in a previous life time by the Marshall) since after the Preacher killed the Deputies his gun would surely be fouled and would not be able to be reloaded with the cylinder full of lead bullet cartridges that killed the poor Marshall. The Marshall would have chased the Preacher around the town until he killed that hipocrite of a Preacher and did it with a Colt cartridge converasion. A conversion that loaded from the loading port gate with the cylinder never leaving the frame of the gun. The Lord does work in mysterious ways uh? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Anywhooooo.....I'd have to say it seems more logical to have the Colt Army 1860 revolver for a favorite than the Remington Army of 1863. Three years into the civil War by the way. ha ha ha ha ha ha

Two things, 1st, the loading lever/cylinder pin assembly was a replacement fit in too hard and bound up the ball driving arm, so I honed it till everything worked like new. I had the hammer spring out at the time and thought I'd check to see if the overrun had changed....IT STOPPED COMPLETELY!! Now that I seemed to have step one down, this got me to thinkin', if the cylinder turns differently under spring pressure, maybe the bolt/trigger spring needed adjusting. I gave it a slight upwards bend and now everthing indexes perfectly every time!! An old gunsmith once told me, there may only be 7 movin' parts in your revolver, but that equals about 700 ways things can go wrong.....boy was he right.

With your ROA dump the filler(as in throw it away) use the load most accurate for you insert a lube pill or a wooly wad then seat the ball where it stops. At the top with filler is not necessary in a C&B Chamber just in a cartridge brass type. Let the ball sit where you seat it on powder or lube pill,or wooly wad.

The looks in the photo was mostly dirt. Action is smooth. I have searched the web for reference to DART but have found almost nothing.

The side of the frame has no marking other than the proof marks from Italy and a box with AA in it. I guess that is when it was made. Barrel is marked "BLACKPOWDERONLY" on the lower right side. Under the barrel is only a serial number. On bottom of the grip is the serial number and DART. Also there is a B. The number on the grip does not match the one on the barrel but when one removes the wood, the number there matches the barrel. The cylinder has counter sinking on the bullet holes for easy loading. There too are the same proof marks as on the frame. The bolt has been reshaped so that it slants on the left side coming up to a flat about half the size of the slot it comes out of. I can find no other markings.

Anyone have any information about this pistol? I plan to take it out this weekend and compare it aginst my Spiller and Burr. I also plan to replace the bolt. Thanks in advance...

Wayne, That Belgian Centennial 1860 Colt auction #104279109 on Gun Broker ends Sunday morning (18 hours to go). It's sitting there right now with a $205 high bid from someone named Ken44-40. You wouldn't let it go for that price would you?

Subject.....44cal Colt Army cylinder with press fitted chamber sleeves to reduce the chambers to .359 and a barrel sleeved to fast shallow twist rifling .357 in. diameter to fire conical 38cal. bullets.
What would the opinion be regarding the chamber sleeves being press fitted? Would powder fouling get between the sleeve and chamber walls? Would the pressure blow the sleeves out? Would it be better to thread the chamber liners and screw them in? Thread them in tight and notch the edge for a spot of weld?
Anywhooooo......what would the opinion be concerning a cap&baller tricked out to fire modern 38cal. conical bullets thru a sleeved to fast twist shallow grooved rifled barrel? Not cartridges but 1860 Colt cap&baller with the fast twist rifling and sleeved chambers for conical 38cal. 125gr. bullets.

Snaggletooth got me looking at my Baby Dragoon again, so I took it to the range. Finally a nice day, mid-70s.
I used a piece of copper pipe for a loading lever extension and it worked great. Loading wasn't as bad as I remembered. It took #10 caps but the #11s worked better. 7 - 10 grs of BP.
0 buckshot. No jams, no misfires in an hour and a half. I'm still trying to figure out the maximum reasonable accurate range for this gun - it might be 3 feet. It gives a nice little BOOM and it actually wasn't bad at 50 feet when I figured out where the lead was going.

I see you have been liquidating some BP revolvers.
Do you have any flasks for sale, or other accroutrements?

Thx,

I would REALLY like a decent Colt Colt 1851 Navy (2nd Gen), and I'm willing to trade my Euroarms Rogers and Spencer. It comes with an R&D conversion cylinder in .45 LC, and I'll even throw in a brass framed Remington .31. I'll give more details to anyone interested. Both guns work fine and are in good shape. Cash works too, or an original antique of something, but I'm likely asking too much.
I aquired both items from Uncle Lee, and he should vouch for them. Check with him, and he will be straight with you.

Thanks....have a great day.
