I was just responding to an E-mail from a friend that I met out in New Mexico when I was there a couple of months ago for my wife's friend's funeral. He was talking about his Taurus 1911PT that had broken the ambidextrous safety after only 80 rounds or so. He had been having a hard time getting it back from repair. He just now got it back and put it on consignment because he was fed up with it. He told me of another one where the slide stop broke and the shooter got the slide in the face, after only the first round, new out of the box! I suggested he stick with revolvers, but if he was stuck on the 1911, maybe he should look at a USFA. I started to come to a realization that I think is worth sharing. I'll just repeat here what I said to him in my E-mail.
I have maybe 30 firearms, many of them antique. I have some Italian reproductions of famous "old west" guns. The Italians are fine weapons and indeed one of my favourites is the 1851 Navy. I also have an Italian (Pietta) Single Action Army. At the same time I have an 1851 Navy Second Generation Colt, made by Colt, in the US. I have an 1860 Second Generation Colt, made by Colt, in the US. I have a 1966 Colt Python and a United States Fire Arms Single Action Army, both made here in the US. Without question, the American made weapons that I have are superior products to any of the Italians.
I fired Smokin' Gun's Police Service Six and loved it. Many others of you out there will attest to the quality of Ruger Firearms. My USFA and Colt Python are outstanding. I just read on gunblast.com about Freedom Arms model 83 that is chambered for the .500 Wyoming Express. Jeff Quinn (in 2006) says Freedom Arms is the best revolver in the world. Go to gunblast.com and read his report, if you haven't already.
Of course there are plenty of mediocre American gun manufacturers and many high quality European ones as well. This isn't entirely about flag waving. It's a lot about consumerism. Many Americans have a love affair with their gun. American manufacturers who put their heart into high quality products, to compete in free enterprise, cannot be beat.
Buy American....Dudes, you'll never regret buying the best.
