Ok, lets say you have a 45 caliber BP revolver load using a 457 ball backed with 55-60 grains of powder. Now, lets say you fill a shortened 45-70 style case with 55 grains of BP behind a 255 grain slug. Would the 255 grain shortened 45-70 case be any more volatile than the 55 grains in the BP revolver? Thanks ;)

I did some deburring, adjust the cam leg of the bolt to come up a little earlier, and file down the top of the front sight a little. Turns out I have a too-positive full cock notch too.

It was getting late and storm clouds and wind were coming in fast so I hurried to the range with a couple of new target ideas that I had done earlier. Neither worked out too good, but I can make em work next time.

Went to the bigger next stand over from the last one I used. It was pretty windy.

Well the screwsand plate came out OK. Dang thing looks like a cut off fork with the tines bent at 90%. I cruised up to Corinth MS to recuperate and visit an old buddy of mine. We went to Dixie on Friday ( about a 100 miles there) and finally found the place. You gotta take a left on Reelfoot Drive. Finally found it... and was kind of disappointed. We walked inside and there are about ten of fifteen display cases with civil war medals, pairs of locally made derringer and pocket pistols( lots of them, probably 50 pr). Sone older long rifles along one wall and a big counter that I had to stay on one side of while a lady took my order and went back into the warehouse area to get my stuff. I sorta wanted to walk up and down a bunch of aisles with inlays , horns and stuff but it was not to be. I did look at the Pedersoli-Gibbs rifle cork and I believe it was on sale at only $1400.00. The fit and finish were pretty good on the one I handled but the only caliber they had was in .45. A guy bought a Sprigfield, bullets, powder etc. while I was there. He had driven down from St. Louis ( about 3 hours) and he was telling me all about his arrowhead collection. I guess I built it up in my head for all these years and expected something different. They did have all the stuff I wanted though and I still spent about $150.00. Got a cool scar coming too.

Kittery has a Ruger Old Army (actually two) with a real short barrel and bird's head grip. The cylinder has to be loaded outside the gun on a stand (there is no loading lever). It looks funny but it has a nice balanced feel to it. The gun also comes with the original frame and grips -you get two guns in one for a little over $500.00 (I can't remember the price but it was over $500, less than $600).
No bad at all once you get used to the way it looks.

Took my new Sharps to the range for the first time. Fired my first reloaded shells I ever did load too. First lead bulllets I ever did cast also. A lot of firsts today for me. I hit on two loads that done pretty good. I tried some Goex Express and tried some Swiss powder also. I had all the Swiss loads too hot, when I got to the lowest charged loads I had with the Swiss it started coming together. I need to load some lighter Swiss loads and go back again. I think I found the magic load for the Goex Express today. The Sharps was the hit of the range, I had to answer a lot of questions and everyone had to come check it out. Couple of guys had to shoot it, I think they might be headed for the dark side, Hee Hee. Pics. on page 2.

Just got myself one of those 5 1/2 inch barreled Pietta .44 Armies. Wow was I impressed. It is probably one of the best shootin revolvers I've had. At 15 yards with 25 grains it kept three rounds in about an inch. I loaded the other three chambers with about 15 grains and they spread some. It shot windage true and about 2 inches high at 15. I think I'll keep her. I had an Army a long time ago that shot like that and I let it slip away. Not this one. My new carry piece. Plenty of power and still carriable.

Posting a couple of left handed holsters for sale. These are new and have not been used. The first one is a straight draw holster with a leather thong wrapped mainseam and open toe. It also has a hammer thong. It will fit the 58 Remington, 51 Navy or 60 Army with barrels up to 8 inches. The belt loop will fit belts up to 3" wide.
The second one is a cross-draw with open toe and hammer thong. It will fit belts up to 2 1/2" wide. It has about a 30 degree rake to it and fits snuggly to the belt so as not to wobble around.
Both are 100% handmade of heavy 9 oz. cowhide and in a mahogany (reddish brown) color. My holsters are of firm leather so as to hold their shape when empty. This makes reholstering easy with one hand.
I'm asking $40.00 each on these two. That's cheaper than usual, but then times are hard. Shipping is $8 per holster if shipping separately. Always glad to answer questions. Keep your loads dry! Doug

Check out this shotgun. Damn but the Belgians made/make some nice guns. Would you shoot this one?
I wonder what it is about antique Belgian guns that keeps them in great shape for a long time. Is it that stronger metal?

Well I went for my yearly visit to a gunshop today.
It is 54 miles round trip to my nearest one.
I looked around, and was glad to see AR-15's still on the rack for sale.
I picked up a can of Goex FFF. It was $17.99 plus tax.
The dealer told me this was the last shipment of blackpowder he was buying. He said he had enough to sell to almost nxt summer. He said it is a real hassle w/ paperwork & regulations to bother with it anymore. He started talking about getting fingerprinted at the State Police barracks. I don't know if it was required to sell BP, as I didnt want to ask him for details about it.
He also said there is only one other dealer in Connecticut that sells Goex BP.
He has BP subs & smokeless that he still has on the shelves w/ less stricter regs-.
I hope Goex powder doesn't ever become restricted by buying over the internet.
So it goes.

I've mentioned in prior posts the unfired Pietta 1858 .44 that's been sitting around here waiting in the wings. The weather was nice today, so I thought I'd better get to the range. This gun came with a spare unfired cylinder, but I'm keeping that one nice and new for now.

Set up my target (with the 2 extra quarter-size bullseyes) at 15 yards, because I can't see good without my glasses beyond that. And if I put my glasses on the gun sight's a blur - oh to be young again. Shot three cylinder full with my standard 25 grains of FFFG Goex and .454 ball.

I brought the 1861 .36 to the range with my trusty can of PAM as a lube. I like PAM. Cheap, easy to use, not as messy as Crisco or Bore Butter. And I learned by mistake that PAM can be sprayed over the power/under the ball. Yep, I loaded the powder, thought I loaded the roundballs, then sprayed the PAM right on the powder. Crap...oh well, what the heck, I loaded the balls over the wet powder and it worked great. Kinda like a lube pill substitute - though nothing beats a Junk Yard Dog Lube Pill.
Cold weather is here - might have to switch back to the ROA and it's bigger balls and chambers.
I've been shooting alot of arrows every week, but archery is all about hitting the target. BP shooting is about the boom, the smoke, the smell, the cleaning, the history. Target hitting just isn't that important.

OK, today I spent the time trying on all my clothes in the closet.
Time to take out the long sleeves & coats.
SG, I had looked at the matching Gunfighter Coat, that matches your black vest and thought the tag read size 46.
Well, I looked again after trying it on and it is size 44.
I am a 46 size coat now, like my m/c jacket was.
I will offer this coat to you first, and give you first refusal on it. ($20- ship to Cal.)
It is a color/black Frontier Classics coat which matches the black Gunfighter vest you have.
I know your vests are adjustable in the back, but this coat is not. So I don't know your size?
Anyways here are pics nxt pg. Ifn you dont want it or it dont fit, I offer to another Old Coot for FREE, w/ $20- shipping postage USPS in a large box here in the USA 48.
Thx

Oh, this jacket was worn only once. It still has the tag on it. Paid $80 for it. Its a nice'un.

[Edit]

Date Posted: 10:13:02 10/14/09 Wed

The Pietta 1858 .44 that I posted on below about the grip arrived this afternoon. As advertised it look unfired. It's an old one with the long thin Pietta cylinder stop slots like my Pietta with target sights. All chambers align with the bore.

I did a quick clean on the bore and chambers and took it to the range for 2 cylinders full with 25 grains of Goex FFFG. It shot low and to the right. You can see me climbing the shots up on the first cylinder aiming higher with each shot.

After the first shot I finally got around to looking at the sight. From the front it looks like it's leaning a little to the right, or the left when I'm aiming from the rear. I think the barrel is screwed on just a hair past the center mark. I could knock some off the top of the sight to bring up the muzzle, but I'm not set up to be fooling around with the barrel/frame joint.

Mmmm. Maybe I should just file the top of the sight and learn to shoot to the left of target with this one. Keep it simple?

Target on next page.

Subject: Lack of .375's lead balls

Author:
Wayne
[Edit]

Date Posted: 12:43:17 10/13/09 Tue

I expended just about all that was left of my .375 lead balls the other day. In between bouts of the flue I got up the energy to run the hounds and shoot the cap&baller Navy Colt.
I shot alright but not fantastic. My glasses are getting too fogged up so I need some new lenses. It was a good outing all the same. I made some good shots anywhere from 10 yards to 60 yards.
The hounds ran off for the hills and I had to go find them. They got tired of the noise I guess. The little buggers.
I took the ramrod and the little bottle of solvent to check the barrel. Little hammer and wedge popper too to take the barrel on and off.The barrel never got dirty enough to really need cleaned. I fired over 200 balls if I am remembering right. The lube pills did well. They kept the cylinder turning free enough too. Really amazing actually. All that fouling and the barrel didn't get real dirty and the cylinder kept turning.
I read where people think getting thru 8 stages of fast shoot at the Cowboy shoots is something. They should use the "pills" over their powder and have better accuracy and a free spinning gun.
I have a kind of simple method for point shoot. I leave the front sight up high where it's real visible and point the barrel with the high sight but point below the target.Works good. Just see the barrel pointed right and pull the trigger. No real aiming just point the barrel aiming low. The idea is to see the sight at a glance and pull the trigger. It's more reliable than point without looking down the barrel. It's kind of like shotgunning. Look down the barrel and let er fly.
Anyway I didn't take any pics of the targets. Just shot alot and hit some and missed some. I would do better if the light in the woods was better and the glasses were not all fogged up from scratches. I keep my steel sight polished some on the surface I see when I aim and it was getting dull and hard to see as was the "V" on the Colts hammer.
Anyway the soy wax lube pill recipie I had made up works real well. equal parts soy wax, paraffin wax and mutton tallow with 1/2 the equal in toilet mounting sealer wax. The ring of wax for installing a toilet.
One thing new....I can't get Rig Gun Grease anymore so I used some amber colored grease from one of the tubes made for a grease gun. It was smeared liberally inside the frame and the rear of the cylinder and base pin and all. When I cleaned.....I swished the parts in hot soapy water and all the grease and FOULING just swished right off. I couldn't believe it. When I swished the frame in hot soapy water the thing got clean in every nook and cranny there is. Cool grease. Kept the parts clean while shooting and washed right off taking the fouling with it. The gun cleaned up easier than ever and that was after 200+ shots.
Anyway the Navy Colt is a Uberti and it doesn't take .380 balls. The cylinder chambers are on the small side at .369 and the barrel grooves are .366 inch. Strange combo for a Uberti. I just ended up with the barrel and cylinder from parts I ordered. I don't know if that is two defected ill machined parts or if they make them that way anymore. It's a good combo though with the chambers sizing the ball .003 over what the barrel grooves are.
Well, I've used up my daily allowance of energy typing this. Time to go back to bed. This freaking flue is a bitch. Comes and goes in waves of feel better and then feel like hell.
Anyway I try to put something of interest and something that's helpful in my posts so people may find some advancement in thier cap&ball shooting.
Yep, I know I sound like a broken record but......
