However the problem is how would we do this vote thing. A direct democracy is not an inexpensive thing, just look at the cost of any given presidential election, state election or local election.

So while I agree with you in principle (I have always held that ONLY people who pay the property tax should and ought be allowed to vote in property tax elections) the method to get the task done is a major hurdle.
