Subject: Exactly! Look at a map - there is no reason you can't avoid Bourbon Street if you wish. Tour the Garden District, go on a boat trip or see one of the historic homes etc - for pity's sake, the MAR board running this has provided an entire guide to "child-friendly NOLA" here: http://www.mid-atlanticregion.com/child-friendly-nola/

As with any other city, you can either cower in fear and horror or explore, learn and enjoy. You'll find the same in any other tourist-centered city if all you do is haunt the touristy and dicey parts: NYC, Chicago, Philly, Boston, Orlando, Miami, Vegas, LA, SF, Atlanta, even Nashville (which I know many people wish NANs would be limited to). Or if you feel you MUST go to Bourbon Street at night with your kids, use it as a moment for education if in fact you should run into a drug addict, drunk person, naked leftover Mardi Gras revelers etc - about the dangers of excess, the sad possibility that this person is in need of help with a problem, or the understanding that there will be all kinds of people no matter where you go in life.
