Subject: So, how is Go Fund Me any different than selling wrapping paper or popcorn or other fundraisers? (m)

Why is a crowdfunding site worse than all the fundraisers we've endured over the years - whether for dance or Girl Scouts or school or whatever? I've been approached to buy all sorts of nonsense, of which the team/school/dancer only gets a small percentage. I always say I'd rather make a donation than to buy an unneeded item. For example, if Boy Scout popcorn is $20, and the Scouts only get to keep half, I'll give them $10. They end up with the same amount, and I'm not stuck with overpriced popcorn. Girl Scout cookies are different, because they are unique and can't be bought elsewhere, but the reality is the individual troop only gets a small percentage of the sale. They're better off with a cash donation than for you to buy a gazillion boxes.

Anyhow, I didn't read the entire thread below (who could?) but I'm curious. If this same dancer had sent out an order form for Yankee Candles or World's Best Chocolate or the myriad other fundraisers out there, would you still be as outraged?
