Subject: This is the North American Championships - not a national. Because it would not be a "National" - there are 'three' countries in North America (more to include the Caribbean). To be a true "National" each of the 3 nations would have to have separate events. There is no need to have a "closed" event here in NA.
In reply to: Wondering 's message, "What is the reason NAIDC can't be a closed event and be a true Nationals for North America?" on 06:11:37 07/09/17 Sun

The Irish Nationals is nothing more than a glorified O's in comparison to the All Irelands or even regional O's in Ireland. There is talk that it may go, as well, since it's not really being attended int renumbers they thought. It was only instituted because of the year they moved the All Irelands (previous qualifier for Ireland and NOT an open qualifier) and the Irish dancers lost their secondary qualifier. With the All Irelands returning to their traditional spot, who knows if they will be keeping the open qualifying aspect and/or the Irish Nationals.

They closed the Aussie Nationals years and years ago due to the heavy-handed politics that were going on then. In fact, anyone outside of Australia can't really compete in a feis, even if visiting (as told to us previously, this could be in error, though). And in the last few years, they've created an international O's for overseas dancers to compete in; however, it is not a qualifier.

As for NA, the NAIDC is the secondary qualifier for NA dancers, there's no qualifying for overseas dancers. And for the spots that a handful, and it is only a handful of overseas dancers who do place, do not take away from NA dancers from qualifying. It's only small-mindedness that enters in to take away from these placements.

(btw, if it weren't for the occasional overseas dancers, the majority of NA dancers would not have an understanding of the level of competition elsewhere. Those few dancers who travel to NA for the NAIDC have helped to raise the standard of competition in NA.)
