I used a 15 lb weighted vest during my hardshoe rounds at class, but I found it wasn't fitted enough and threw off my center of gravity, so I couldn't dance full out.

Instead, I have switched to doing plyometrics with the weighted vest, which has helped a lot. Once you take off the vest, it's much easier to jump and get that explosive power one needs in Irish dance.

The weighted vest isn't as bad for your back as dancing with ankle weights, but I still wouldn't recommend it.
