Subject: there is nothing ok about poor sportsmanship. It does and will trickle down to more than just ID. ID is a great activity and so many positive benefits come from it. But the bullying has to stop.

Throwing tantrums over not winning and a classmate placing higher in a round or overall. Not ok.

Poking fun at someone because their wig or headpiece is crooked or not their style. Not ok.

Openly discussing how unattractive someone is, or how ugly heir costume is during class, at a feis or major. Not ok.

Making excuses that it's everyone else's fault when things don't go their way. Not ok.

Parents befriending teachers and adjudicators so their dancer is "familiar" with said TC/ADJ. Not ok.

In the many years DD has been dancing, I've seen it change from seeing these examples of poor sportsmanship and bullying be the rare occasion, to becoming commonplace. Maybe it's the advent of social media, and the immediacy of getting 'likes' from total strangers to reaffirm these things, or the fact that parents constantly make excuses "that's just deirdre's personality! she doesn't realize she's being mean!" or "she's just so competitive! What can I do!"

All of these behaviors are certainly not confined to ID. The kids and parents that behave like this in ID, are the same outside of ID, but perhaps have the self-control to be less obvious about it. After all, you'd be expelled from school if you acted this way during school or on a school trip. In ID, none of these dancers are reprimanded, They are too valuable to the TC and seem to be elevated to a higher status. sigh.
