Author: seeing different group better
Subject: Rotating is far fairer. Judges should have a "feel" for any comp, but it is unrealistic to have the same panel view 100 or more dancers, 3 times in a row and be totally objective. Each time. Doesn't happen. With the timing of this past NANS, rotating panels could have been easily done.
In reply to: however (inside) 's message, "curious -- rotating panel vs fixed at a major? I'm sure fixed is more consitent, either they like you or they don't so you have 1 chance in the first round..." on 18:59:34 07/14/17 Fri

To be honest and as one who has adjudicated other activities, when presented with the same group a second or even third time around, human nature kicks in and even the best can become less attentive as the event moves on. The most attentive judge who is highly ethical will become bored after all; think of trying to be fair for the same 140 dancers, seeing 280 dances, and then another 70? They will base on the first round.

People tend to be more attentive when initially watching a group.

One or even two judges out of nine bringing a dancer up or down doesn't impact as much as one out of seven - even with dropping high and low; because what is left is not really a reflective score, because with the remaining five, if a second low-balls a dancer?

There is no real perfect way until standards are set and judges are held accountable for how they score. That's a long way off.

  • This nationals you can see one judge helping certain schools or tanking a certain school with 2 judges. All they need to do is get 2 judges out of 7 to push someone into wq or recall numbers. The high # is dropped and one of their 5 zeros but that leaves them with some points (abnormally high) from the 2nd high score. (NT) -- Insist on rotating, 13:03:09 07/15/17 Sat
