It's nearly impossible to determine if a school is the "perfect" fit just by visiting and talking to parents. Which is why the 6-month ban is so difficult for families who move and then decide it's not the right fit. If you live in a community, you know people in that community and can likely determine the right fit by reputation, personal contacts who you trust, seeing the school at local feises, etc. But when you are new to an area you are at a real disadvantage. Be flexible in knowing that the school won't be exactly like the one you came from, some things may be better, some may be worse. Your kids' particular age group may be great at one school, and not so great in another (and we all know that one mean kid can change the experience for your kid). It's OK to make a mistake and decide you need to make the move.

Be wary of schools that are overly effusive of what "one big happy family" they are - in my experience, that is not really the case for ALL families. Also, be wary of those "transfer schools" out there. Those newer school that are made up primarily of dancers who transfer locally. While a few local transfers are to be expected, when the rate is over 50%, you are likely dealing with a really intense group of parents. In my experience, these schools also have special deals with their top transfers, including different tuition rates, classes at a location catering to these dancers while making 90% of the rest of the class drive 2 + hours, privates by "invitation only", for only top transfers, etc. This breeds general resentment and makes for a certain "pecking order" amongst dancers.

Best of luck!
