Australia is a similar size to the USA geographically, but in terms of Irish dancers our numbers at nationals are closer to the numbers at some of the larger North American regions, that's why I feel Australia could combine regions (in the very least NSW and ACT). The advantage of larger sections is that it can spur on the competition. However, it can also increase travel costs and make sections so large that judging is inaccurate. The numbers in UK are small too, so do you combine regions in these countries or do you split regions in America? How do you determine a region is too big? Do you aim for 70 or fewer dancers in most sections? More regions = more qualifiers, so would you have to limit it to WMH + the next 3? I appreciate the idea of percentages, but while it ensures even representation it doesn't necessarily mean it is fair, a smaller region with fewer contenders can sometimes result in qualifiers that wouldn't recall elsewhere. However, they are at worlds to represent their region, regardless of how they might stand up against the next region over.
