Fred, your friend would need to use a lot of protection for it to over winter there, but it can be done. A lot of people use Christmas lites on them during cold spells. The ones in the photos in my original post were brought in each winter. I had to sell the biggest one last summer. It was getting to big to move around any more, so it was either that or plant it, leaving out this winter. I have some hardier ones growing here, but even they need some protection a few times each winter.
I did keep one alive over 2 winters with a lot of time & work. Here's a picture of that one.
I used a bottomless 5 gallon bucket to protect the bottom, filled with leaves. Whenever rain was in the forecast, I'd cover with an upside down trash can. Whenever the forecast called for below freezing temperatures, I would tie up the leaves and wrap them with bath towels, covering it again with the trash can. I'd un-cover & un-wrap it as soon as it was warm enough so it could dry any moisture in it & get sunshine. This would go on all winter. The 3rd winter, I didn't get it protected on time and lost it.
