Doing a small project for grad school, and looking for some feedback on a potential soil watering control system. The idea is to enable growers in semi-arid areas to control / optimize the water they use on their crops. This would be a networked sensor system that has a small battery backup but gets its power primarily from the sun. It would enable the user to measure the amount of water dispensed from the unit, and also measure the soil hydration level as the control variable. My questions are:

(1) What features would be valuable to the user (local display, remote display, wireless as examples).

(2) Why does the user want that feature?

(3) Would the user prefer a standalone unit that could be autonomous, or a networked system that could be controlled as a whole?

(4) Could the user allow it to have wires or must it be wireless?

(5) Would the user prefer a lightbar display (i.e. Low -- Med -- High) or a numerical display?

(6) Would the user rather have a feature to program the crop type (so they can control the optimized hydration level) or have it be simple to use and have no such feature?

(7) Any other input would be great!
