The Problem:

The need for more consumer interest in "green cars" (hybrid/electric/bio-diesel, etc.) A need for a more rapid transfer from petro-based personal vehicles to more eco-friendly models across the citizenship.

The Social Invention:

I propose a special agreement that needs to take place among the multitude of car-making companies in the world. We need to have widespread car dealership lots that carry strictly cars that are considered in the "eco-friendly" category (i.e. hybrid/electric/biodiesel, etc.) In order to have one dealership carry multiple makers' brands, there would need to be a "no-competition" agreement struck by all of the participating makers as a collective mission to lead the way into the future. This way multiple models of eco-friendly cars could be available to the consumer in one place, so they would not have to shop multiple dealerships searching for relatively scarce eco-friendly models from different makers.

There are countless consumers who believe in the need to for alternative fuel transportation no matter what the conflicting science on the environment says. No one can deny that eco-friendly cars would be better for the environment period. The consumers and their money is out there, waiting. The set up of these types of dealerships would also allow car-makers to put forth publicly a moral committment to the environment and their consumer's well-being. Let's face it, the technology is already here and rapidly developing. If consumers were to demand that they receive more eco-friendly choices, the car-makers would follow that demand.

It could start out as a "no-competition" agreement, and if the sales of eco-cars in general began to increase to a pre-determined positive outcome, then the makers would see a reason to begin their own competitive dealerships with an expanded eco-car division. These specialized car lots would also be able to make advances in improving the service and maintainence of these types of vehicle, which would lower the costs of materials in the long run (e.g. hybrid batteries). This could also lead to an explosion of environmentally friendly transportation in the same way that the SUV explosion took place in the U.S. The bottom line is that this is a serious and immediate need.

The car-makers have the power to meet that need (and as billion dollar corporate entities, a moral obligation to meet that need). No money would be lost, and the lazy consumer mind would take notice and show appreciation with their patronage. It is a consumer revolution that could send positive ripple effects into the areas of world security and stability.

Third world countries, with their more agrarian societies, could improve their status by becoming exporters of materials for newly developed "eco-fuels". The oil barons would no longer be able to determine foreign policy which may lead to a decrease in military strife. The potential is undetermined, but very positive with a little imagination.
