Ah, where to begin? This is exactly the type of discussion that should be happening. One wonders if the HC admin has done their homework.

A few comments about some comments. But first, full disclosure: I am, as my moniker indicates, an alum who played at HC and was a captain on a team on which Pearl was an underclassman. So I count him as a friend.

If Regan's quote was old, then we should cut him some slack. But his quote, together with recent comments made by McFarland at alumni club receptions, reflects a lack of "true" interest, if not conviction. You don't have to be a lawyer or PR person to craft better quotes that reflects HC's excitement at the great opportunity presented by the ECAC opening and, simultaneously, does not offend the date with which you are presently dancing (Atlantic), unless of course HC is just going throught the motions with the aplication. Pearl's comments are much more diplomatic and professional than the pabulum (which actually implies that a baby would eat it) coming from Regan and McFarland. Indeed, Pearl is probably tempering his excitement not to not offend other Atlantic schools, but to not anger HC admin, who are acting like that officer in "Catch 22," which is to say not like an officer at all.

BeatBC: what HC should be doing is backing up their application with public statements that reflect their excitement at being considered for and desire to gain admission to a such a great league. That's not "harping," but speaking the truth. Public ambivalence is the thing that reflects MOST poorly on HC, not excitement or ambition.

Zipp: you are absolutely correct!

Everyone's comments re: scholarships are enlightening. We all know that the Ivies, as a general rule have plenty of money to go around, not that they even really NEED to make liberal use of it to recruit. Many athletes, regardless of their family economics and regardless of the lack of 'true' athletic scholarships, would love to go to an Ivy. The diploma goes a long way. The fact that the Ivies have alot to give in aid only sweetens the pot. KY Crusader '75 heard the same thing that I did, which I discussed on this site some time ago, that Harvard, and other Ivies probably soon to follow, is planning to provide grant-in-aid full scholarships to students from families whose income is under $43,000, and partial grants to those under $80,000. Whose left?? 5% of the population? Though no one is under the illusion that the Ivies don't make attractive aid offers to athletes, this only publicly confirms it.

HCHockeyalum,

I was just curious...without revealing your identity, since there are some around here who I'm sure would like to maintain their anonymity, could you give us an idea of what time you graduated? And also, given what your name is, I assume you played hockey at HC. Have you had any direct contact or given any input, as a former hockey player, to the athletic department regarding your feelings on the future of the program? One would think they'd have to take a serious, hard look at someone's opinions, especially if they came from someone who was directly involved in the program.

From HCHockeyalum's post....

" I am, as my moniker indicates, an alum who played at HC and was a captain on a team on which Pearl was an underclassman. So I count him as a friend. "

HC's site says Pearl is class of '89.
