Subject: Gilmore in Boston Last Night/FB Scheduling Note

Coach Gilmore met with a crowd of about 50 former HC FB players and other interested parties last night. He is an impressive speaker who handled himself extremely well and left a favorable impression. One interesting scheduling note is that the Crusaders will play at Delaware in 2005.

The only other time that HC played at Delaware was in 1983 and the Crusaders won big 24-0 even though Fenerty was injured. I believe that after the game they were ranked #1 in Division 1-AA for the first time.

1983 will have been 22 years ago. Good luck but don't get your hopes up to high. Delaware has lots of transfer students from IA. I hope you do win and my reason is that I think Delaware's coach is a complete jerk. You will see.

Well, this is indeed a step-up in the schedule, eh ?

23,000-seat Delaware Stadium is one of the better facilities in the East for watching a game....and assuming this is an early season date, it's likely to be a night game.

The Blue Hens draw very well at home....a normal crowd is usually in the 19,000 to 20,000 range while their Homecoming/Parent's Weekend games often sell-out.

A) Too expensive a trip to Worcester for UD,

B) HC can't afford to pay UD the guarantee they'd likely request,

C) New England/Central Mass. not in UD's recruiting base,

D) While UD fans travel well, this isn't the once attractive match-up it was/would have been in pre-Patriot days,

E) UD doesn't have a large alum base in Central Mass. and,

F) With Umass ( as well as UNH, Northeastern and URI ) an annual A-10 opponent, another trip to Mass./New England is unnecessary.

I suspect HC would get the same treatment from Richmond, William & Mary and James Madison on a return game. Sad, but such is the current state of affairs.

Let's be grateful that UD is willing to host us and is easily in position to cover our expenses and perhaps make us a profit - something the program is desparate for - on the trip to Newark.

BTW, for those who've never been there, UD has a very attractive campus in a Colonial motif.. It's athletic campus, about a mile from the main campus, is quite impressive. In addition to it's 23,000-seat, lighted Delaware Stadium, they have a 5,500-seat multi-purpose athletic center ( Carpenter Center ), a 1,000-seat baseball stadium, a 1,500-seat outdoor track & field complex as well as a 4,000-seat indoor facility, a lighted soccer stadium, softball stadium, 2 lighted football practice fields, 2 indoor ice hockey rinks and an outdoor Olympic size pool. Needless to say there are many D-1A programs that wish they had what Delaware has in facilities !

For those planning ahead, UD is easily accessed by car just off I-95 or by train via Amtrak or SEPTA via Philadelphia/Wilmington.

Great an outdoor olympic sized pool. What good is it? Not too many students swim outdoors while school is in session. It is usually a bit cold to do so.

GR -

This link will help you....

Just a hunch but in addition to hundreds of students and faculty using this facility during the Summer session, one can usually swim outdoors for a couple weeks or so from the 3rd week in August thru the Labor Day in the Fall semester.

UD also has an Olympic size indoor pool on it's academic campus....

A Crusader swimmer, I presume? What has happened to your team?
