Cesar? St John's has a great coach???? Noone knows for sure what they have. Roberts is probably a fine recruiter but the jury is still WAY OUT on his coaching ability. The only stats he has as a head coach were years ago at DII Queens where he was 27-84.

As far as education is concerned, look at the rankings. I don't think it even makes the Princton review of the top 350 schools regardless of whether M Cuomo went there or not.

friends who know him say he's very impressive, active in local gyms, a winner. To Oates and other recruits he may be a great coach.

Let's be honest, HC had a losing record last year in the Patriot League and lost to St. John's. Obviously their program is in a rut, but if you were to ask who has a better chance of making it to the sweet 16 by Oates year and you do not say St. John's then you are making a decision based entirely on bias. Norm Roberts has made great inroads already in NYC in a short time. He has already placed himself in the running for Theo Davis, Lavell Biggs and Derek Character who are all top 50 recruits next year. If a player is good enough of a student he can be successful coming out of either of these schools although HC is obviously a better academic school.

A source close to Oates, a senior, told hsnewjersey.theinsiders.com (Mike Sullivan) that the big man could have a decision in the next 48 hours. [Along with SJU] Oates is also considering scholarship offers from Fordham and Holy Cross

a look on oates's page on insiders shows no hc or fordham--only sju has a high interest--there's also an article on him dated today on insiders-looks like it's about sju--any subscriber?

he has the best chance of playing right away at HC... he has the best chance of making the NCAA tournament at HC... he could be a big man on campus at HC... if he's the kind of guy like he sounds he is, he would get along with the kids on the HC squad more than the nudie-bar raiders at st. john's... all while most likely getting the best education. i know st. john's is the big east, but they are the joke of the big east (last place).

This is taken from the Middletown Times Herald Record dated May 6, 2004.

College basketball
St. John's wants Chester's Oates
St. John's University offered Harriman resident and Don Bosco Prep basketball star John Oates a scholarship over the phone Tuesday night.
Oates, 6-foot-10½ and 255-pounds, will decide by week's end whether to accept the scholarship.
Recently hired Red Storm coach Norm Roberts visited the Oates household April 26. The family visited the Queens campus Saturday.
Fordham and Holy Cross also have offered Oates a scholarship, and Rutgers has shown considerable interest.

If Oates accepts the St John's offer he will be playing in a good league against top-flight competition and half of his games will be in MSG. How could anybody blame him for that decision? The Patriot League is like biddy basketball compared to the Big East or Atlantic 10.
