The 27% graduation rate at Uconn that you refer is based on recruiting years that included 15 players. Of those 15 - 4 left early for the NBA, 4 transferred (and count against the graduation rate), 4 graduated, and 3 failed to graduate.
I think it's fair to say that Calhoun and Uconn can really only be criticized for these last 3 that failed to graduate (and even PL and Ivy League schools are going to have some guys that slip through the cracks)

Here is one HC fan that wishes we joined the BE w/ya and were still one of the better programs in NE. Wish we could play you guys each year and bring some of the local rival excitement back to HC BB.

Hey, you guys got Blaney, so a part of HC's past is in your program.

Let's see. 3 failed to graduate, 4 went to the NBA and didn't graduate, so, I guess they really weren't interested in getting a degree which is the purpose of a college. That's 7, so we're down to 46%. Four became transfers. They didn't transfer for academics so it is doubtful they would help your argument if they stayed or if they left, but we'll ignore them. Now, if you think 46% is a good graduation rate, there is no helping you.

how do you blame that on the school/coach/program? Would you suggest that the players that jumped to the NBA stay in school to help Uconn's graduation rate?

I'd be willing to bet you that if any current member of HC's roster was good enough to jump to the NBA after their junior year they'd be gone in a heartbeat (and in fact the only PL player in the NBA - Adonal Foyle - did leave after his junior year).

What should really be kept is a statistic for each school on the players that failed ot graduate/transfer/go to NBA. To point to a 46% number knowing that 4 players have gone to the NBA is unfair and you know it.

Finally, you make the point that Uconn made a mistake recruiting these players that transferred (most likely for non-academic reasons). Do you honestly believe that Fingleton or Sankes transferred to HC for academic reasons and not basketball? Does this make HC guilty? The fact is you have no idea what kind of students these Uconn transfer were so it's presumptious to judge Uconn or them.

I always thought that Foyle came back and got his degree a year or two after going to the NBA. Is UConn correct or uninformed?

[> [> [> [> [> What is a college education? -- El Guapo, 20:32:03 04/08/04 Thu

"Would you suggest that the players that jumped to the NBA stay in school to help Uconn's graduation rate?"

I think it depends. People should be in college to get an education. If a player leaves for a professional career -- whether in basketball or business, such as an exceptional entrepreneur -- it would make perfect sense for them to continue their education informally, never getting a degree, or formally, but not until perhaps years later. Either would be well within the spirit of scholastic pursuit -- but they would be counted as a negative in the stats.

On the other hand, many students, and not just athletes, aren't at college for "an education", especially at places like UConn. They're there to learn a professional skill, whether basketball or accounting or programming. For such a person to get a degree would really be beside the point if they could be a success in the NBA or as a programmer without one. Each is pre-professional -- and is that so wrong, really? It's not what I wanted out of college, but different strokes.

So I think statistics are limited without taking a closer look at individual situations, but of course something like a 27% deserves a real close look, at the very least. Let's not kid around here.

IIRC, Adonal was two credits shy of graduation when he left for the NBA. He ended up graduating in five? years.
