Schools today have to offer varied menu to attract the wide ranging interests of top prospective students. If you only concentrate on BB, the school's reputation would suffer and rightly so. If you have to rely on BB to promote HC's name, that would be a very sad state of affairs. BTW, HC will be at Colgate for crew races tomorrow. Let's see who wins. Oh yeah, recent mens's LAX, Colgate 12 - HC 7. And, did you hear about Alex Woodhouse, BB player from VA. He picked 'gate over HC, W&M, and Maine. Hope he works out well, he is an excellent student.

He must be shy and not wanting to play in front of crowds. W & M and Maine have about the same BBall tradition as Colgate. Colgate is a fine school but please don't try to pass it off as a legitimate D1 hoop school, given its attendance record this season. If he is a good hooper and good student, I congratulate Colgate and wish the kid well. I don't think one has to knock Colgage to promote the Cross.

Well, he'll play in front of crowds at HC and other schools. Speaking of crowds, your attendance figure at the HC - 'Gate football game was not exactly noteworthy. The 'Gate side of the field was full. There was less than 100 on the Cross side, including the band.

gate: it was a great game. I was impressed with your following, and amazed, as usual, to witness our dismal attendance. It was a perfect day on campus, the football game ending 15 minutes before the start of the first bball game of the season. When I got to the Hart, I said to some friends "...you just missed one of the great games!"

It was a great game and with the lead changing often I was very worried. HC had a better team than their record showed. It was a perfect day for football. BTW you have a very nice stadium. Things are looking up for Cross.

Gate Raider, I was at the Colgate-HC football game this past season and though your team brought a significant contingent, you did NOT have more fans than HC there and to say that HC only had "less than 100" fans there is simply not true.

The official attendance at the game was 10,166. Now some of those people come disguised as empty seats. The visitors sit on the shorter side of the field and are more concentrated so it may give the appearance of having more fans. Gate, do you really think you had more than 3,000 fans there?

I will concede that the HC showing was dismal, especially from the students. However, the one strong contingent that goes to the games are the families of the players, and that by themselves is something over a hundred. I've made the point here on more than one occasion that the students have not supported the football team in the last 5 years or so that I've been a season ticket holder. In addition, neither the alumni nor local Worcester folks come out for the games. That's why I've said that HC should not be losing $2M a year on a sport that has very little support. It was time to either do something posititve and make the team competitive or chuck the team completely. With all due respect to Coach Dan Allen, he and his staff were not doing the job. Not just this past year but for many years.

I have every confidence in Tom Gilmore to turn things around. After watching virtually every home game for 5 years and many away games, I am convinced that the quality of player at HC is such that they can be very competitve with other PL and Ivy schools and, most importantly, are academically representative of the HC student body. They were let down by the coaches. Coach Gilmore may need a couple of years to turn this team into a winner but I will be shocked if they don't win at least 4-5 games this coming season and win more than that in succeeding years. Last year's team played afraid and even when they had a lead were looking for the other shoe to drop and with the exception of the Georgetown game, it always did. That just won't happen with Coach Gilmore. They have to, and will, learn that they can finish a game and CAN win.

Gate, it WAS an exciting game and thanks for the compliment about Fitton. You're probably used to watching games at Hamilton and having been there on more than one occasion over the years, Fitton's 23,000+ capacity must look like the Superdome by comparison. Having a crowd of 5,000 at Andy Kerr would look pretty big but in Fitton you become conscious of a spread out and sparse crowd.

Yes, perspective or not, I do think 'gate had more than 3,000 fans at the game. Their side was practically full and I doubt there was more than 200 on the Cross side. Sorry. I do think HC will be a much better team this year and the coaches will make the difference. Still, I believe Colgate will repeat this year.
