Well, since I started this post and raised the issue of the break-up of the Big East only one respondent (Chu Chu) has addressed my questions. I appreciate the comments that HC is in line with other Patriot Legue schools and other high quality Liberal Arts Colleges in the number of Varsity Sports it offers. However, IMHO HC can't be all things to all people. In order for HC to participate in nationally recognized sports such as Basketball and Hockey it is going to take money. Where is the money going to come from? I believe the administration when they tell us the large number of varsity sports spreads the funding of all programs very thin.

Are we willing as alumni and interested fans (mostly basketball and football) to sacrifce some sports in order to provide funding needed to elevate the basketball program to a reconfigured "Big East"? or are their other funding mechanisms HC is not using?

As I mentioned, I personally am unsure. I am a season ticket holder for Men's Basketball and would love to see HC play at a higher level, but I don't think it is right to tell a student that we are taking his chance to play lacrosse away (for example) so I can see HC be a a top 5 seed in the NCAA tournament.

I am sure the administration is struggling with these issues as well. Maybe comments here could provide them some incite on how alumni feel on these critical questions. I know comments here will be skewed since we all log on to discuss HC athletics, not the philosophy department.

Again, I ask how would you answer the questions I pose?

I think as I have said many times before, you have got to invest in the sports that are revenue generating if you want to continue supporting sports like tennis and lacross.

HC is a very small school and to support as many sports as they do w/o a major sport producing a tremendous amount of revenue is not smart business. Look at schools like St. Joes and Gonzaga, do they support as many sports as we do?

You have got to make a serious investment and decide which sports you want to succeed? I would say mens and womens BB and hockey would be my choice. Both are D1 and could make the jump into a major conference and generate $$. You can't continue to run all the programs on band-aids and toothpicks, something has got to give.

The PL (although some see it as an academic super-power, is a dog for HC athletically)When will they realize that? Until the administration gets it's act together and decides to get serious in the arena of D1 athletics, things will never improve, otherwise go to D3 and stop the deception.
