I have had three children, my last being born in 1985. With all three I have had enemas. With the first two they were large volume soap water enemas, and with last was a Fleets enema.
With my first child the nurse assisted me into a hospital gown, and gave me a vaginal exam and said that I am in full labor. She left for a few minutes, and when she returned, she shaved me. She then placed me on a pad, and turned me on my side, and explained that she would be back in a few minutes. I heard water running in the bathroom, and she returned. She told me to look at the wall and take a deep breath. I felt something enter my rectum. She told me to take deep long breaths while she administered the enema. I was alarmed, and told her I do not want the enema. At that point the clamp was released and I was being flooded with very warm water. I was cramping bad, and the nurse told me that is was the soap doing the cramping, but we have to get you cleaned out. I looked up and the bag was being drained very rapidly, and I was squeezing my cheeks to keep it in. Finally she had finished
giving me the enema, and paced a bedpan under me. She stayed right with me until it had all been expelled.
Before I was released from the hospital, she enemaed me again.

My experience with my first child was similar. Around 6 am we arrived at the hospital, my parents were along - this was their first grandchild, everyone awaited the day with anticipation. Little did I know what was in store for me. We get up to the third floor - labor and delivery. We checked in at the nurses station and were accompanied to a birthing suite by an attractive blonde nurse in a classic nurse whites. Bed on one end of the room and a sink and bathroom on the other. The nurse handed me a hospital gown and sent me to the tiny bathroom to change telling me to take everything off, including my panties. The doctor had done a rough internal exam the day before and I was bleeding, all I could think about was staining the sheets, unaware what was about to happen. Next came the IV. I hate needles, most people do I guess, so I was very scared. I had never had an IV before so I didn't know what to expect. She got it in on the first try and told my husband to go down stairs to the reception area and fill out paperwork. Off he went oblivious what she had planned. She then proceeded to fill out paperwork asking several questions, one of which was when was the last time I ate anything. We had one last fling before parenthood the night before. We went out to eat and had a huge dinner of Indian cuisine. Then she also left the room. A few minutes later she returned and went over to the sink where she started filling up a clear greenish colored rectangular bucket with water. She then added a packet of soap, stirred the concoction and returned to the side of the bed. She placed the bucket on the bedside table and said, "have you ever had an enema before?" Oh my God! I thought, what if my husband walks in, I will never hear the end of this, I couldn't believe we had forgotten this from birthing class. That teacher said it would be a small enema - this didn't look small to me - a bucket full of water going into my ass? NO! I was terrified that my husband would walk in on the procedure and lose it! I could just see that happening! "Well, she said, it won't hurt. When I finish you can get up and run to the bathroom - you'd be surprised how fast some of these pregnant women run!" She then grabbed a packet of KY jelly and proceeded to lube the tip of the tubing coming off the bucket. She then asked me to roll over on my left side, which I did. She lifted up my right butt cheek and said, "are you ready", I didn't know what to say so I said "yes, go ahead." She then stuck the slender tube all greased up in my rectum and released the clamp. Water began to flow - and flow and flow. She kept her hand on my butt holding in the tube with the other. Then there was dead silence It seemed like it took forever for all of that water to go in. I was in sheer panic, afraid my husband would walk in and see this. Finally, it was finished. I was so pregnant and full of water that I was afraid to get up in fear that I would explode so the nurse had to help me to my feet. I ran to the bathroom, IV pole in hand and sat there - and sat there... and sat there... I heard the door open and my husband out in the room. He was laughing - he knew! How could he? I finished up and cleaned myself up in fear that the nurse or doctor would see something I had not cleaned well enough. My husband said he was walking past the nurses station and heard them talking about me being "on the toilet with her enema." The rest of the day is not as exciting to most - a 9 lb. baby was delivered later that evening!

Yes the nurses are extreme with giving the large soapy enemas. We are in labor having contractions, and they are pumping us full of soapy water to flush out our bowels.
How do you think the OB would feel being pumped full of soapy water.

Lola,
Your story reminds me of a similar incident, but the shoe was on the other foot. My husband was in the hospital for surgery. He was being prepped by a very attractive nurse who was giving him an enema when I walked in and opened the curtain while he was having it. When he got up to release the enema, I could tell that he had a full hard erection underneath his gown. I admit that I felt a bit uncomfortable knowing that he must have enjoyed having an attractive woman stimulate him in that way. I'm sure that she was aware that he had an erection because you could not help but notice. He was shaved before the enema, and I was also suspicious that he had an erection then too.

Hahahaha! I bet he had a ball! I'm sure my husband would have lost it if he had come in on me and the nurse. Thinking back, the nurse that cleaned me out was kinda cute - short blond hair, and I have to admit that the enema felt good - but only for about 30 seconds!

When I was delivering, the enema did not feel good, it hurt like hell. I was contracting and wanted to push the baby out, and this nurse was filling my bowels with very warm soapy water at high speed. I will say that I was definately cleaned out based on the results in the bedpan.

No bed pan for me - I had to get up and run to the bathroom. It took like 5 mins to run all the water into me. Not sure if that was fast or slow, but it seemed like forever.

One thing I remember is that the enema container was sitting on top of the roll around bed stand/tray that they usually have you eating off of, rather than hanging from an IV pole. She raised that rolling cart up high, and lowered the head of the bed before she started.

This was down south - I live in DC now and I never even hear mention of pre-delivery enemas anymore.

My nurse hung the bag of soapy water, very warm water on the IV stand and it was elevayed pretty high. When the water started, it went in hot and fast, at least two quarts. It was hell to hold with the baby contracting, and the cramping from the soapy water. My butt cheeks were clamped tight to keep everything in. If I would have released before she put me on the bedpam, it would have been everywhere.

What I do know is the bedpan was completely full, and the nurse said that the enema was a good enema. I saw nothing good about it

Mandy, you got off lucky.

The nurse started to give me an enema just like you had but I just could not hold it and started pooping right away. The nurse let me finish, then cleaned me and the bed up and left.

A while later she and the aide came back into my room. The aide had an extra wide potty chair for very fat people. The nurse as carrying a filled bag that looked bigger than the previous one. They got me onto my left side and the nurse put in the nozzle, then I felt her pump it up inside me. This time she got the whole bag into me and then helped me onto the potty and released the nozzle. The nurse then left with the bag, but the aide stayed with me until I was done releasing.

I thought I was going to poop everywhere. The warm soapy water was flowing very fast, and I had the worst cramps.
When she put the bedpan under me, I released for about 15 minutes. The bedpan was full, and I did not know a person had that much poop in them.

Before I was released from the hospital, I got a repeat treatment from nurse Ratchett.

I had horrible enema experiences with both births. The first time I was an enema virgin and was not prepared for not one but two hot soapy enemas. I had a strong urge to go soon after the nozzle was inserted the first time and awful cramping but the nurse would have no part of it. She made me take the entire dose. Despite my protests I was soon getting a second enema. Although my second birth was easier the single enema I got was no fun either. And the shaving part made itch terribly both times. Fortunately my daughter never had to put up with these rituals.

I wasnt so lucky to run to the bathroom or fill a bedpan. 22 years ago , I had major problems giving birth to my son. I wasnt allowed up , or onto a bedpan. They had a catheter in me too. They prepared me for a med flight to a larger hospital , which fortunately I didnt need . I was given a warmed Fleet enema . I was an enema virgin at the time too. Knew what they were, what they did, but never had one . They had me on my left side, and put a Chux pad under me , and told me to go on the pad and they would clean me up. And they did. It was a horrible mess . After expelling , and resting , they put another Chux pad under me , and put in a white suppository--assuming a Dulcolax. It was 10 times worse than the enema. Again, another major clean up. I delivered my son about 50 mins later .
Since then , I have had Barium enemas and enemas at home . Amazing how we can come to like something so horrible !

What type of discharge enema did you get? I expected to get a Fleet, but got another can of warm soapy water!

I see posts about pre-discharge enemas. What type of syringe did they use. Early in the morning of my discharge I was told I would get another enema. I thought it would be just a Fleet but I got a soapy from a white can. What type of discharge enema did some of you get?

My intro to enemas was in the hospital, but I wasn't having a baby. I was severely injured in an accident at age 22. I underwent three surgeries during a month in the hospital. Prior to one of the surgeries, a nurse awakened me at 6am and squeezed a Fleet enema into my bottom and rolled me on a bedpan. It was awkward and painful. I hoped never to get another enema again!!

However, after I was allowed to go home after a month, I had home nursing for a few weeks. The visiting nurse talked me into a warm water enema (she disliked Fleets) and it was soooo comfortable. Obviously, this changed my feeling about enemas. This was 25 years ago.

My first hospital enema came in the late 1950s. I was a few days past due and my doc told me to take a full dose of Castor Oil on an empty stomach first thing in the morning followed by some orange juice and wait. A few hours later I started to get really strong cramping and spent much of the day on the toilet, but no baby.

In the late afternoon I told my doc that nothing was happening and he told me to go and check into the local hospital. When I was settled in the room, dressed in a gown, he came in and examined me. After he left, I started chatting with my roomate who had given birth a day or so earlier. When she learned I was past due, she said I'd be getting a big enema. I said I'd was empty from the Castor Oil and she just smiled and said wait and see.

Sometime later two nurses came in, one maybe 50 and the other younger. The older one was carrying a white enamel enema can and some hoses and stuff. The younger had a pitcher of milky looking water. They elevated the bedside table and put the stuff on top. The younger nurse left and returned a minute or two later with a bedside commode and put it next to my bed. I said I'd gone earlier, but they said the doc had ordered the enema to get my labor started.

They put a rubber sheet on the bed and then a towel on top and had me lie on my left side. The older nurse picked up a rubber tube and pushed it through a hole in a rubber ball, about the size of a pool ball, until a foot or more was exposed. I asked why and she said it's to help you retain your enema. That did not sound good. She opened the hose clamp and squirted some water out, then lubed the tube and started to insert it. After it was in a ways she started the water flowing and continued to insert the tube. Finally I felt the ball adainst my rear and she held it pressed it firmly against me.

Soon she told the other nurse to refill the enema can from the pitcher and I realized they planned to give it all to me. I started to cramp badly. She stopped the flow and then continued until the pitcher and can were both empty. She held the ball very firmly as I cramped and moaned.

After what seemed like an eternity, the crampy feeling started to change some and they helped me onto the commode and I started pooping like Niagra Falls. But the cramps kept on, and I realized labor was starting.

Reminds me of my first birth in 1965. I arrived at the hospital, and was examined. Two nurses shaved my pubic hair and turned me on my side saying that they will complete the prep. The younger nurse left the room and came back in a few minutes with a white can with a long tube connected. The older nurse said it is time for my enemas to clean me out. I thought no big deal, since mom gave me enemas grwoing up. the nurse filled the container with very warm soapy water, and inserted the colon tube into me while the second nurse held up the can. She released the clamp, and the nurse elevated the can higher which increased the pressure and flow into my bowels. The cramps were horrible, contractions, and cramps from the enema. I wanted it to be over. Since the can was about empty, the nurse poured another container of very warm soapy water into the can. I was sweating like a pig trying to contain all the water. Finally the second can was empty, and she removed the tube. They rolled me on my back and put a bedpan under me and told me to expel. I pooped my brains out, and pooped all over the bed. They cleaned me up and told me it was time for my final enema, which was very warm, and soapy to make sure that I was cleaned out. During birth, I was still pushing out the remaining enema. This torture did not help to keep me from pooping

I know that as a guy I shouldn't post, but what I have to say is, I think, important. I had a hospital stay about a year ago. I was given the first Fleet enema of my life.
It burned, it upset my stomach and the worst of it was that it took forever to work. I must have been on the toilet for half an hour and during that time I was really hurting. Now, I'm no stranger to enemas. My wife and I have been married for six years. She is sweet and beautiful but she can be very firm. She is a strong believer in the health benefits of enemas, and trust me when I tell you that she insists that I have good enemas, and that I have them good and often. She gives them to me slowly and with love, but with her there is no such thing as little enemas. Every one she has ever given me has been soapy and a full two quarts and the rinses are also always two quarts. Now, here is a suggestion that would help relieve the work load of nurses and would make husbands like me be better cared for: When the husband is checked in, why not ask the wife if she gives enemas to her husband? If she says yes, why not tell her to bring the equipment she uses on him at home and to assume the task of seeing to his bowel health just like she does with him at home? For the nurses, there would be less work. For the wives, there would be the satisfaction of knowing that her husband was being cared for just like he is at home. And for the husband, ther would be no Fleet enemas, which would be a great, great blessing. Again, sorry I violated the rules of this board but I think my idea is worth your consideration.

I thankfully never had to go thru childbirth enemas, we adopted . However , about 8 years ago, I was hospitalized for a series of tests . I was given 2 Dulcolax suppositories the night before them. The morning of the tests , a large plastic bucket of very warm and soapy water . Was told I had to take the entire container . I did, but not pleasant . I honestly think the suppositories were worse than the enema .
I had never had an enema before .

My first enema experience at childbirth was in 1972. I started having contractions, and hubby toook me to the hospital. After arrival I was taken to a room, put into a hospital gown and it was confirmed I was in active labor. A young nurse came in, placed a pad under me and shaved my pubic hair. Soon after another nurse joined her and placed me on my side with a new pad under me. The young nurse went to the sink and I could hear the water running. The older nurse inserted her lubricated gloved finger deep into my rectum telling me that the Dr. has ordered a soap suds enema to empty my bowels. I felt something being inserted in me, and the rush of very very warm water. I looked over my shoulder and saw a 2 quart hospital type enema bag hanging on the IV stand being drained of soapy water. The cramps started, and I asked the nurse to stop. She told me that I would have to take my quarts to get me cleaned out. The cramps were horrible, and she told me to take deep breaths. Finally the bag was empty, and the young nurse put a bedpan under me, and asked me to expel. That was so embarrassing pooping in front of someone.

Renee, I can sympathize with you. My test prep was no fun at all. After lunch the day before I was given four Dulcolax tablets and later a bottle of citrate of magnesia. No dinner either, but I didn't feel much like eating because of the laxatives.

Early next morning I got a large plain water enema and had to use a potty chair to check if I was cleaned out. I was not so she came back with another enema that had Dulcolax in the bag and said it would be difficult to hold, but was necessary. She used a colon tube and a rubber ball like others have described and held it very firmly against my ass until the cramps were almost unbearable. I stayed on the potty cramping for a long, long time. That prep was much worse than the barium enema exam later in the day.

Yes, Renee, they did. The radiologist showed it to me and inflated the balloon so I could see before starting.

I was told to lie on the cold x-ray table with my butt in an air filled ring sort of like you'd see at a swimming pool. That was in case the barium leaked out of me, which did not sound good. They hung this giant clear bag on an IV pole, put the lubed nozzle into me, and inflated the balloon until I felt very full. They then pulled on it to make sure it was really in tight.

The doc took an initial picture and then started the barium
flowing. Thankfully it was warm, but they really filled me full quickly getting most of that giant bag into me. It felt so heavy inside.

After a few more x-rays, they lowered the bag below the table and unclamped the hose and the enema ran back into the bag. I thought it was over, but they said no. They then pumped me full of air and I felt even more bloated than with the enema and took a few more pics, then said to wait a few minutes while they checked the images.

After a couple of minutes, they came back and the assistant took the bag and walked with me into the bathroom and had me sit on the toilet, then released the air in the balloon. I sat there for a long time, passing gas and barium, then went back to the room and got a meal.

In the late afternoon, I was given another laxative to drink to clear out the barium. Amazingly, in the few hours it was in me, it had hardened and it was tough getting going again.

It was not a really horrible experience, but I surely didn't feel much like playing with enemas for quite a while afterwards.

They use a balloon inside of you ?? That sounds horrible, although I bet it does the trick to keep the barium inside .
I had a BE a few years ago , no air . No balloon , just a larger tip nozzle.

Yes. It was a bit uncomfortable. When the doc showed me the inflated balloon before putting it in, it was about the size of a plum, but I think they inflated it more when it was actually in me.

They told me not to clench, but to completely relax. I did and the balloon sealed my butt completely. Relaxing made the huge enema go in easily actually.

I didn't leak even while being led to the toilet after the exam. It only came out when the assistant released the air after I was sitting on the seat.

The nozzle was inserted deflated and it felt a bit like using a douche nozzle for an enema but a bit bigger. When they inflated it, it didn't hurt at all. It just felt like I was really, really packed with poo down low. They gave it a brief pull to make sure it would not pop out, but that was really nothing.

The whole exam really did not hurt except for some cramps and the serious blows to my pride. I think the worst part of that was being marched into the toilet after the exam with a nozzle up my butt by the assistant carrying the bag and kept company until I was seated, then the blast when the nozzle was deflated.
