How many steps do you need?
Let's see:
1)try to "go"
2)get out the enema bag.
3)Pour in some soap.
4)Think about how long it's been since your last BM. If it's been more than 2 days, add a little Epsom Salt.
5)Carry the bag over to the bathtub.
6)Turn the water on slow, and let it run hot. When it gets to hot, bring in some cold water to get the temp right. You want warm but not hot. Let the bag fill all the way to the top.
7)Attach the hose.
8)Carry it into the bedroom, or, get a couple of pillows and a towel, and put them on the bathroom floor.
9)Hang the enema bag so it is about 3 ft above where your rectum will be when you are in position.
10)attach the nozzle.
11)Take off any clothes you are wearing, and get into your bath robe.
12)Get into either the Simms or the Knee-chest position.
12)Slowly, and gently insert the nozzle fully into your rectum.
13)Relax.
14)Open the valve.

That is essentially the "Steps" you take for constipation.

I've never had any luck with "mild" laxatives. I hate the cramps created with the "gut buster" laxatives so I resort to either glycerin suppositories or an enema as the relief of choice. Suppositories if I'm in a hurry or enema if I have the time or am severely constipated. I can't use Fleets...They tear up my mucous membranes.

I agree with Muriel (above). Suffers from constipation for
10 years and doesn't own her own enema equipment and finally buys one and then complains it didn't completely
work. Doesn't add up.

I've had varied experiences with Dulcolax. That is actually one thing that drove me back to enemas!
I've taken Dulcolax tablets exactly twice in my life as a stand-alone, though I have no plans to take it that way again.

I've had it as a pre-enema in a complete cleanout.
.
Here's why:
One morning I got up on my day off, and needed an enema, but I didn't really feel like taking one!

I decided that I would take 6 Dulcolax instead. I swallowed them about 6:20AM and skipped breakfast.

Since I was off, I was dressed in a simple muumuu, cross over bra, and panties. Nothing else! I knew I had taken a high dose of laxative so I made sure the toilet lid was up and the seat down.

I got no feeling like I had taken a laxative, or any thing! 10:00AM, no sign I'd taken it! Drank as much water as I could stand. Noon: No sign of anything happening. Drank some Gatorade, but didn't eat. 1:00PM didn't feel hungry, but that was the only thing going on in my gut! 2:00PM, I passed a whole lot of gas, many times more than usual, but still no feeling like there was anything happening!

3:50PM, I was sitting at my computer, wondering if I should declare a failure and get out the Fleet enemas. All of a sudden, I could just barely make it the 15 steps from my desktop computer in the bedroom to the toilet! It was about what I would normally expect from a Fleet enema! Only ONE movement, and that was it!!!

About 6 months later with that memory in mind, I said to myself, "OK, from 6:20AM to 3:50PM was 8-1/2 hours, soooo, if I take the same thing about 9:30PM, half-hour before bed time, I should get good results when it's about the time I usually wake up! I made sure the toilet lid was up, and the seat down, knowing I was not going to get much warning!
I took the same thing, from the same card of Dulcolax!
I lay down and tried to go to sleep in the same way I normally do. By 10:30, I was feeling the same way I feel if I try to sleep after having too much caffeine. Just could not settle down. About 11:45, I started passing a lot of gas, just like before, but I still was like being amped up on caffeine! I got no sleep at all the whole night!
Typically, when you take a laxative, there comes a point before it kicks in where you get a "churning" or nausea, and then the feeling like you have diarrhea but can't go right now!! That started happening about 3:00AM! I felt so bad, I got up, and actually took a glycerin suppository to try to speed things along. At about 4:15AM, I got the same result as I had gotten those months earlier in the afternoon.
My father raised me as a single parent, I've never met my mother. I called him on my cell later that day, and he told me of a weird experience he'd had with a Dulcolax suppository within a few days of my first time with the Dulcolax months earlier. He said that he now considers Bisacodyl, the active ingredient in Dulcolax to be unpredictable and erratic, and he will only use the Fleet Bisacodyl mini-enema as a pre-enema before an Epsom Salt and soapsuds, and not otherwise!

Is there any reason I shouldn't do the same?
