All the talk about Fleets and positions made me wonder: Do any of you do an enema in any position other than knee-chest or left side? Whenever my mom would use a Fleet she would just slide forward on the toilet and reach back and insert it, squeeze, and withdraw, and then she was in position to expel it when the urge got strong. In case she leaked or had an 'accident' she was already on the pot so it didn't matter.

Oops, I pushed send too soon :( I'm thinking I'm going to have to have one later today, it's been four days for me and the Correctol doesn't seem to be helping enough, it's giving me the urge to go but I just can't seem to make anything come out.

I tend not to give on toilet as I have found not able to hold it as long as when in other positions. However if your are giving in this position its best to sit them on the toilet facing backwards (towards system) and lean forwards. Must clearer access

Well I stopped on the way home from work last night and got a Fleet, after trying all day to go without success. I administered it sitting on the toilet and read a magazine while waiting for the urge to get strong. My stool was really big and it was such a relief to finally go. I did have a BM this morning so maybe I'm getting back to normal.

In my experience, position is not so much a factor for effectiveness as it is in comfort depending on the situation. That applies to a Fleet type enema or a regular enema with a bulb or bag.
If I use a Fleet type I have to go in a few minutes regardless of position.
If I am giving myself an enema with my bag, my position depends on the purpose, but most often I am on my back because it is comfortable and gives me access to any other part of my body I choose.

I still prefer the knee-chest position because of the memories associated with the enema.

According to a visiting nurse who did home care while I was recovering from an accident, Fleets are effective in most any position. She preferred her patients lying down on either side -- comfort for the patient, access for the nurse (if you know what I mean.) I was given Fleets in the hospital, all in bed on my left side, then helped to a bedside commode or to a bathroom. While in the hospital, I saw nurses accompany ambulatory patients into the bathroom to give their Fleets.

Fortunately, my home care nurse preferred the gentle use of an enema bag, or it's unlikely I would have discovered its benefits of good health and enjoyment. Her method was starting the enema on my left side, then turning me on my right side when I could without a lot of pain. I couldn't do the knee-chest position at the time, which Angie said was probably the best for a deeper cleansing. The down side is that patients are too embarrassed with that amount of exposure.

I do the regular Fleet enema in the knee chest position on the bathroom floor most of the time.
Its only 4oz. and I think it gets down deeper in the colon jn this position. It takes longer to give me a strong urge to go but I feel it gives me a better BM

I agree with Kate that positions can have more to do with comfort. Me and my 2 sisters got enemas regularly growing up and they would have us lay on our left side to start. Anytime we complained it was uncomfortable they had us change to the other side and them kneel on the bed with head on the pillow. Usually the enema bag was empty by that time but if now, we had to lay on our back. We all tried to finish the enema before the back position!

We all have continued enemas in our own families and use the same positions for all enema given and it seems to work ok.

What was the problem with each of the positions that were tried? Why was the back positioon the one you tried to avoid? It seems as though that would be the most comfortable of all And what was uncomfortable about the left side? Medical people prefer that one.

I'm not into the medical side of this, but from what I understand from reading online, the intestine goes up one side, across the body, and down the other side, so when cramps start its often because the water isnt moving psst the turns, so changing postions help the water flow further into the body which helps reduce cramps.
Maybe someone else can explain it better than me.

I agree that the back position can be the most comfortable since it lets the water flow inside better than laying on the side, but it exposes the body much more than laying on the side, so it depends on the age of the ones gettin the enema and also how they would feel laying like that if others are in the room.

Thank you. I recall that the left side position is used in hospitals because of the way the colon is laid out inside.
That position lets gravity help with the fluid flow.
The back position does result in more exposure, as you said, but if only females are around, wouldn't it be ok?

I agree that the changing of positions helps because of the position the colon. Also, agree that the back position is the best since it lets the water find its own way through the colon without the receiver changing positions. I often lay on my back when taking an enema alone or with s close friend/relative, but you also have to consider than for some people, especially younger ones, there can be more exposure of their bosy than they are comfortable with.
