My larger rubber fountain syringe holds 3 quarts. However, after filling the bag and attaching the hose, I squeeze the air out of the bag and hose, which allows for siphoning another quart into the bag, ending up with a bulging 4 quart bag. I take this large enema several times each month, and the bag has not shown any signs of stress or wear in the 4 years it has been used. However, when trying this same thing with a cheap 2 quart drug store fountain syringe, it exploded at the side seam when siphoning 3 quarts into it. So, the answer to your question about shortening the life of a fountain syringe by filling it to one quart over its capacity seems to be based on the quality of the bag you are using. After my own experience, I sure wouldn't try it again with one of those cheap drug store fountain syringes, but I also don't plan to spend money on one of those again.
