Subject: Keep using a bulb?

When my son was small, I purchased a 4 ounce bulb syringe for his enemas. At about age 7, I purchased an 8 ounce bulb syringe for his enemas. I still remember that the box said, "Adult Bulb Syringe" on it. He is now 11 years old. My best friend knows that I give him enemas, and she gives her kids enemas. A few days ago I mentioned that he seemed a little sluggish and that I intended to give him a bulb session before bed. She seemed surprised that I was not giving him bag enemas, and said that I should start treating him more like a big boy and not a baby. I didn't ask why she felt that way, but I don't see anything wrong with continuing with bulb sessions. Like I said, the box that the 8 ounce syringe came in said that it was an adult bulb syringe, so why bother introducing him to new and unfamiliar enema equipment when I am giving him good enemas and he is taking them pretty well?

There is nothing wrong with an enema from a bulb. It can be a lot more convenient than dragging out the bag plus your bulb is an adult size. If your son is constipated a single bulb of warm soapy water will get everything moving again, but make sure he retains it for a few minutes. I'm also one of those people who believes that an adult can get a decent enema with only a single quart. Just because a bag holds 2 quarts does not mean that you need to fill it all the way up. No, if your son is good about taking an enema from the bulb, you're right, don't mess with a good thing.

Lauren, thank you so much for your post. The only thing that you said that does not work for me with his enemas is the quantity. You suggested 1 bulb but I have found from much experience with him that his system requires 3 bulbs, retained for a few minutes, for a good result. But he does take the 3 bulb enemas pretty well. Lauren, I have looked back in the archives of this board and found posts that tell mothers to get their child on bag enemas as soon as they can, but I haven't seen any reasons in those posts to do it. What do you think is the reason that some people say to get kids on bag enemas at an early age?

Barb:
The one that that I found is that most kids do not tolerate the multiple insertions and that is usually the issue with a lot of moms preferring to use an enema bag rather than a bulb. If your son is OK with those, then there is no compelling reason for you to change. For most of us getting the child to accept an enema with minimum fuss is the biggest challenge. Making the enema as comfortable as possible goes a long way to achieving that and is one reason that I say you don't need too much, it shouldn't be too warm or too cool, and you should take your time. The other thing that I've seen mentioned from time to time is that in order to understand what the child is going through a mom should not be a stranger to an enema either.

I would not be in a hurry to change what is working. It is not necessary to give large volume enemas for relief of simple constipation. A couple of bulbs held for a few minutes almost always works. I would wait a few years to bring in the bag, and maybe then it is a good time to teach him how to do it himself.

I just kind of wonder if giving a boy multiple nozzle insertions would tend to sort of interest them in the gay life. I have two boys. The oldest is nine. I started him on bag enemas about six months ago.

I find this post interesting... I prefer starting off with the bulb, then moving on to the bag. In Europe, bulbs can be had in much larger sizes; 500ml is pretty common... I own one that is 1250ml. The larger one is no good for self administration, but gives excellent results when given!

You must have very big hands. I cannot effectively use even a 500 ml bulb.

Well, the bulbs I have (from Italy) are oval in shape. Getting my hands on them isn't a problem at all. I'm just not able to give myself an enema with the large bulb!

Barb, honey, before you decide to keep him on bulb enemas or go to bag enemas, consider WHY you are giving him enemas. If the enemas are for infrequent tummy upsets or occasional constipation, the bulb enemas are just fine. But, if you are giving him enemas as part of a regular program of cleansings for his general and bowel health, please consider a switch to bag enemas. Here are the reasons: 1) A cleansing enema is not going to be effective unless it is a thorough enema. It is easier to give a thorough enema with the bag. 2) As your boy grows older, he will need progressively larger enemas. These will be easier for both of you with a bag. For example, by the time you are giving a 2 quart enema to him, you will be giving him 8 nozzle insertions if you are using your 8 ounce bulb. Las but not least, the day will come, probably in his mid to late teens, when you will teach him how to cleanse his own body. Clearly a bag is easier for self-administered enemas. I can't tell you if a bulb or a bag is better. You must examine the porpose of his enemas and then decide which equipment is best for both today and tomorrow.

April, you have given me pause for thought. I am one of those mothers who was raised with sceduled enemas. I was given enemas once per week and was a very healthy girl. I have only one child. She is twelve, and she just seems to go form cold to cold and frequently has little interest in her meals, or in anything else. I have been giving her bulb enemas on kind of an as-needed basis, but I intend to put her on a weekly schedule as soon as she gets home from camp. Your very helpful discussion of the bulb versus the bag has helped me decide that my child should have her enemas from a bag.
