Did anyone get an enema or suppository before or after getting their tonsils out. When I was 7, I got an enema the next morning, expelling on a bedpan! How embarrasing!

So did I Dottie. This was back in the 60's, when did your experience happen? It was about the first thing they did right after admission, putting me in a gown, and getting me into bed. I was 12 at the time and it was very scary. My parents were sent to the waiting area and the nurse came back with a bucket of soap suds on a cart. It looked huge, I had had enemas at home but this was much bigger than the hand syringe mom used. She gave me the whole bucket. I got to expel on a potty chair but I had to hold the enema while the nurse went and got it. She wasn't in any hurry. I also got another one before I went home several days later.

My tonsiles came out a long time ago (about 1955). Back then it was the "in style" medical operation. Yes, they gave me an enema (it was the first enema I ever had gotten other then from mom). Guess I was glad that I'd had bag enemas before the enema at the hospital (they used a metal can) so I knew I could take one and just exactly what to expect. The only surprise for me was that the woman who cleaned the room what the same one who gave me the enema. My guess is that she was a nurse in training. Like all kids, my parents told me that I would be given ice cream after the tonsile operation. I got no ice cream!

Kathy, I am not suprised at your story. When was about 7 I had my tonsils out the nurse came in soon after my parents left and announced that she had an order for an enema for me. Despite my protests she came back and turned me on my side for what turned out to be a very soapy enema. Needless to say I did not like it.

Going back farther than any that have posted, I got my tonsils out during easter vacation from second grade. The night before Mom gave me a SSE at home. The next morining, wearing my pjs we walked to the trolly, rode it to our stop and got off, and walked 2 blocks to the Dr's office where the operation was done. Dad picked us up in a borrowed car later and then he returned to his job. fifteen years later my youngest sister, at the end of the school year for her fifth grade was to get hers out. Mom drove her to the hospital the afternoon before. Because she was under 13 years she was in the childs ward, even though she had warn a bra for ovr a year and was sprouting pubic hair. Temps were done rectally which she hated. The nurses gave her the enema, and she had no problem with that as we were all use to them at home. She stayed 2 nights. How times change.

I had my tonsils out when I was 7. When mom and I arrived at the hospital I was told to take off all my clothes and wear a gown.
20 minutes latter a nurse gave me a seditive suppository. After the operation my temp was taken rectally every 3 hrs for two days.
After my discharge and a couple of days latter mom gave me an enema.

My tonsils were out, when I was 12. Yes, in hospital I got enema about 3 hours before operation. The worst, nurse gave me enema in mom presence. I had to expell in child's potty (too little for me) and wipe myself in front nurse and mom. I was very embarrassed, when nurse checked my cleanliness after wiping. I was too old for it, but it was children hospital and, perhaps, it was rule for nurses.

Why wouild a person need a enema for a tonsil operation? Wrong end if you know what i mean.

Oh another question? If someone is in the ICU ward for like a week would they give that person a enema?

I think, enema before tonsils operation was important for prevention constipation in post-operation time.

At least, 30 years ago, enema before any non-acute surgery for children and teens was usual thing. My oldest son, who was 13 then, was operated because of hernia. He got enema before operation. I recall all 3 boys, who were in ward with my son, had enemas before operation. It was in Germany.
