The best way to dry the inside of an enema bag depends on whether it is open top or closed top.

An open top bag should be shaken out and allowed to hang to dry with the open top up and the hose removed.

A closed top bag should be shaken out and hung with the hose side facing down so it can drip, and the hose removed.

No bag should be laid flat or placed in an enclosed space until it is completely dry inside to prevent mold growth.

Hoses, colon tubes and the like should be hung vertically NOT COILED until they are dry. Coiling greatly impedes drying and will result in mold.

The idea is to get everything to dry quickly to prevent mold growth.

Lisa,

I have a Klystra Paris bag which I found almost impossible to dry thoroughly because its shape causes water to be trapped when it is hung with the opening downward.

Here's something that I found, works very well. It's actually not all that bad, if you don't mind a little extra fuss to get the job done well.

My solution to that was to hang the bag with the opening up, no cap screwed in, and insert a thin piece of tubing that's long enough to reach the bottom of the bag. I then use the enema hose to connect the end of the tube sticking out of the top to an old Aquarium air pump. This quietly pumps air through the hose and into the bag at about 5 liters/min, which escapes out the top of the bag and in doing so, it drys both the inside of the bag, and the enema hose totally. The Klystra Paris bag would still be wet after several days of just hanging it with the opening downward, whereas, with this method, it would dry totally in 12 hours or less. This is worst case - other equipment will dry much quicker, especially hoses.

For open top bags, just hang the bag up with the hose still attached, and connect the pump to the other end of the hose.

This method is also an excellent way to dry out the inside of a Higginson pump.

I have set aside an area in my bedroom closet where I can hang the equipment and hook it up to the pump.

You can pick up an Aquarium air pump for $15 - $20 from Amazon.com. A pump for a 30-40 gallon aquarium would provide the flow rate needed.

Sorry if the post is a little long. Maybe some folks would find it interesting.

Instead of bleach, which is kept downstairs in the laundry, I have for years been using some Listerine to sanitize my enema equipment. Actually, I don't use branded Listerine, but the store brand which is the same contents. Does anyone else do this?

In case you may not be aware, having cramps during an enema can sometimes force bowel contents into the tubing and even back into the bag. If not properly cleaned afterward, this provides an ideal environment for growth of mold and bacteria. To help prevent this, always hang the bag high enough to provide a strong downward flow and immediately close the clamp at the first sign of cramping. Just to be safe, I use separate equipment for enemas and douching.

Sandi,
I completely agree that every woman should understand that the same bag should NEVER be used for enemas AND douches - just one OR the other!

I may have posted this before, but i can never understand why both an enema and a douche nozzle are included in enema kits? It seems like they are telling women that they should use the bag for both procedures.

I think they should include in some kits a douche nozzle only and label the box as containing a Douche Kit, and in other kits include an enema nozzle only, and label the box as containing an Enema Kit.

I think that would send a much better message to all women. I have told friends my idea and they all agree!

Thanks for reminding all readers!
Carol Lynn
