Subject: Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Suppositories Excellent Alternative to Oral

Ladies, if you're ever suffering with a headache and/or fever, and you're feeling queasy like you couldn't keep anything down, Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is available in a rectal suppository for adults. I've used them occasionally and I think they actually work faster than oral Tylenol.

A home health nurse first gave them to me several years ago after I was injured critically in an accident and my jaw was wired. The suppositories come in 650mg strength for adults, and dosage is one every 4 to 6 hours. They're available OTC. You might have to ask because many pharmacies keep them refrigerated. They are very easy to take (or give), do not burn and do not stimulate a BM.

The trick to making the suppository more effective (and melt faster) is to hold it in place for about 30 secs or so against the side of the rectum where it can be absorbed quickly into the bloodstream. If there's considerable stool packed into the rectum, a bulb enema is advised. That's what the nurse did the first time with me.

Another time Tylenol suppositories are useful is when you have a severe sore throat and swallowing tablets are painful. I just wished they made Tylenol #3 in supp form for such times.

Tylenol #3 can be inserted rectally. Just use a little water soluable lubricant on the pill, and it will work just fine.

Where can one purchase these types of suppositories? I have yet to find them Wal Mart or Walgreens.

You may need to ask the pharmacist or clerk. Suppositories are usually kept refrigerated. Don't be afraid to ask. They get all kinds of requests. BTW, acetaminophen is the generic name, and the suppositories may come in different names such as Fever-all.
