While growing up when a family member came down with a cold or the flu at the first sign of the symptoms an enema was given, if you had not had a BM that day then it was a mild soapsuds followed by a saline rinse, if you had a BM then it was only the saline enema, then a saline enema a day, usually before bed time, till all symptoms were gone and then for one day more.

Between me, my three sisters and parents there were sometimes up to 6 enema bags drying in the bathroom for the duration of the illnesses.

I did same for my family and now being empty nesters the same for me and my husband.

Same deal in our family, except it's suppositories not enemas.
