For some they work well, for some they don't. For me they work well. I sometimes take one a Saturday or Sunday morning before I go out, to "get it over with." They usually work
in 15 min or so.
For those form whom they work, I would like to know hwo long it takes for them to work.

Glycerin suppositories take 30 - 45 to produce the best results for me.

I can feel the suppository start to work in about 10 min. As yuou know the longer you hold itin the better it usually works. I try to do something while I am waiting to get my mind off it.

Isuually use the Fleet adult ones. You may want to try the Dulcolax supppsitories; they work rather quickly, but are expensive, The Fleet liquid suppositories will work in five or ten minutes. My sister sometimes takes two glycerin suppositories at bedtime and they work around breakfast time.

I would try the Dulcolax they are more convenient than enema.

Use 2 Dulcolax suppositories .Hold them as long as you can. I was given that in the hospital before. They work, trust me.

2 Dulcolax suppositories will work even better by pushing them deeper in your colon; e. g. by the help of a well lubricated glass dildo.

Three to four times per week for me also, Ann, except I take 2 quart baking soda enemas instead of suppositories.

Janet If I use a
enema I use a Fleet extra in the knee chest position. I take it real slow slow so I can hold in more than a couple of min. If I can hold it 5 min. or longer I usually get a real good BM from it. better than glycerin suppository.

Thirty to forty minutes, enough time for it to completely melt.

Seems easier to retain now that I am older, too. As a youngster I couldn't hold in a suppository longer than ten or twelve minutes. That meant an enema would follow due to the poor results as judged by my mother.

For me I have two different results from a suppository. If I'm severally plugged up, I put a large dab of KY on my finger and insert it into the rectum, like I'm preparing for enema. If I fell that I'm touching the poop I'll insert a suppository and within about 20 minutes I'll have a good BM. However if I have that really plugged up, hurting feeling and don't feel the poop on insertion, a suppository will not work. Then the only cure is a big warm enema. Any else have this experience?

In the case that you will be completely constipated in order to cleanse the bowels totally it will be the best to swallow 2 oz Castor Oil, this early in the morning, not having breakfasted; 2 to 4 hours later the evacuations will begin, this in an irresistible manner.

They say good things come in 3's and that has been my rule . I have always used glycerine suppositories in 3's and in worst cases even dulcolax suppositories in 3's .That formula has always gave me the best relief.

Yes, 3 at a time . Not only I get going quick, I get a quick clean out when I don't feel like taking an enema.

My initial experience with Doculax was somewhat disappointing; I know now that I disn't wait long enough for them to work. before I sat on the toilet and thought I had completely expelled them. A while later, I found they worked quite effectively - 0n my way to the grocery.

Another testimony in favor of taking enemas rather than using suppositories. One enema and 30 minutes later I am ocmpletely relieved, two enemas in 45 minutes and the feeling is wonderful.

With dulcolax you very often have "repeat performances" - suddenly rushing to the loo to do another do, anything from 45 minutes to six hours after the first

"Do go loo" - that's funny.
But I wouldn't use it myself. It reminds me of
(a) that song by Lush where the backing vocals in the guitar breaks are going "doo-a-loo-a-doo-doo" which I always thought sounded like potty training
(b) there's that 1930s song "How Do You Do, Honolulu" which would sound to a constipation-obssessed child like an enquiry into their bowel functions, about "doing" on the loo

Usually 10-15 minutes for a Fleet suppository. Than I go and feel great.
I do this twice weekly.

The whole idea of physical addiction to, and damage from, regular use of laxatives has been debunked - in the journal of the American Society of Gastroenterology, and by Dr Udi Shmueli in his book.
Severe overdoses can be ruinous - but of suppositories, so long as you don't wildly exceed the stated dose, you can, as Dr Mike Levitt says in his books, "use them daily for years, without concern, if you absolutely need to".

The first 3 to 4 minutes I feel an urge to go, but it is too early then the desire goes away until 15 to 20 minutes have passed. After that the urge to evacuate increases until it becomes impossible to hold the glycerine suppos. in any longer and it all comes outlike a purgative enema.

I use 2 or 3 glycerine suppositories, which I start feeling about 2 to 3 minutes after insertion, but the sensation goes away after about 5 min. inside. Then all is ok until about 20 min. when the urge to go starts again and this time, it builds until5 to 10 min. later, I have to go.

How long it takes for a glycerin suppository to work in large part depends upon both the total glycerin content, and the ratio of glycerin to the 'moulding' agent. In the US the moulding agent is usually a stearate, in the UK it is gelatin. The lower the concentration of the moulding agent, the faster the glycerin is released, and the faster the suppository will produce 'results'. 30 years ago you used to be able to by suppositories in the US with very low stearate levels. These melted very quickly and were typically effective in about 5 minutes. The FDA effectively put an end to the low stearate (and fast acting) products by requiring that glycerin suppositories conform to a published nomagraph (USP) that spells out maximum glycerin content, and calls off a specific stearate concentration.

I use the suppositories 2 to 3 times a wek and before an enema session. The effect is quicker and better with several suppositories. One is rarely effective.
