Dear Melissa, So glad to hear things turned out so well for
you. Sorry to hear the cruel remarks from some of the nitwits that fool around here.
Re your comments about the higgison,I can understand why
some mothers are not keen on it, its true that it gave me
some very good enemas as a little girl, but then my aunt was
very much experienced an its true it takes time and patience to learn to give it properly
A few days ago when my 7 yo daughter Cathy had tummy problem
we were lucky to have help from our neighbor(an elderly widow) she very kindly came over and showed me how to use
her higginson for Cathy. Till then both my girls had they enemas over my knee with a ordinary 8oz bulb. She mixed about half a pint of warm ivory soapsuds an a few drops glycerne then we laid Cathy down on her side on a rubber sheet on the bed, with her knees pulled up a bit(she looked
a bit worried when she saw the strange looking syringe but
I told her Id had it and promised it wouldnt hurt)
The lady told Cathy to take a deep breath each time she squeezed the bulb. She pumped it slow and steady till she sensed some kind of resistance(said she thought the enema had reached the blockage)about half a pint had gone in by then,so she stopped pumping and showed me how to massage the
childs tummy. In the meantime she withdrew the nozzle and told me to press Cathys buttocks tightly together.
All in all she took her enema very well and retained for almost 20min before expelling. She gave Cathy a second enema
this time about 1 and a half pint salt water(she said it was
good for electrolyte loss) and this time all the rest of the
blockage came loose.
I think Cathy liked the higginson better than the bulb, cause she told me later it was the best cleanout she ever had! My neighbor told me she had done some nursing long ago
she very kindly agred to lend me her syringe until I get mine(have ordered one on e-bay) Its old but very good
condition and quality. I guess I learnt a quite lot about enemas from her,but Im not so sure I can give them to my girls as well as she could. I do realize that your sons problem may not be the same as my girls. Theyve both had frequent bouts of constipation over the years, seem to come and go like colds and flu, then go back to normal for a long time. Ive heard it said that sometimes the problem can be a case of a small rectum unable to cope with a large stool.
If you do need to give your son further enemas, you could try
increasing the temperature of the liquid a little. I have
found warm enemas are much easier to retain. You could also
try a different type of mixture more suited to your sons
condition - there is a wide variety of stuff advertised on
the web and sold in health food stores. If the problem does
come back then you may ultimately have to seek specialised medical help but I really hope it wont come to that.
love and best wishes
Debby
