I'm going to date myself here, but when I went into labor with my first in 1972, I was shaved and given a Fleet. For my second in 1975 I got neither. There wasn't time. Lucky me.

I had my daughter in 1984 and neither was shaved nor given an enema. When my mother and I talked later about the delivery she was absolutely appalled because when she had me in 1959 and my brother in 1962 she was not given a choice.

The shave and enema before delivery are making a comeback. We have found that if an episiotomy of performed, shaving of the hair prior to delivery simplifies matters. As far as the enema is concerned, we now administer a 2 quart warm soap water enemas to mothers prior to delivery. The only exception would be if the baby is crowning. The large soapy enemas stimulate the labor contractions, flush out the bowels, and the mom to be is not worried about pushing out feces during delivery.

Darlene,

Sorry to hear that the prep and enema is coming back. With my first baby I was shaved and then given not one but 2 HHH enemas about one hour apart. As a young women I was somewhat embarrased to be exposed during the shave but the cramps during the enemas was the worst. My second birth was a few years later. While I was beig shaved another women was screaming that she would not let the nurse give her an enema. Then I heard a lot of commotion and lots of screaming as other nurses held her down and gave her the enema anyway. My nurse said this is not uncommon but needless to say I cooperated when she put my on my side and gave me a good cleanout. This time I was thankful not to get a second enema. The worst part afterward was the prickly hair as it grew back in and the itching part.

The shave is a little embarrassing, and the enema can be very unpleasant. The mother to be is having contractions, and we are pumping 2 quarts of very warm soapy water into her bowels to clean her out. Like I said these young doctors to not want to be exposed to poop. Many times as we administer the enemas, the mother to be cannot hold and starts pooping everywhere. Our doctors here order 2 large volume enemas for every mother to be.We complain, and the doctors say it is part of our job

I can understand the enema part but the shave seems more embarrasing and unnecessary.

I just had my first child 6 weeks ago, and I am sure I will not have another after what I went through. When labor started my husband took me to the hospital and I checked in. The nurses aide took me away in a wheelchair to the labor room. A L & D nurse soon followed and had me change into a gown, had me lay on the bed, took my vitals, did a vaginal and rectal exam on me. She then placed a bedpad under me, pulled up my gown and explained that they will shave my pubic hair. The nurse and aide proceeded to shave me. When the nurse was almost done, the aide left the room. In in few minutes she came back and entered to bathroom and I could hear water running. The nurse cleaned me up and pulled the bedpad out from under me and placed a new one. She rolled me on my side, and had me bring my knees up as far as I could. She told me that she will now finish my prep with an enema. I thought no big deal, a fleet enema is not bad. I felt a tube enter my rectum, and then the flow of extremely warm water. I looked back behind me and from the IV stand was a 2 1/2 quart clear enema bag filled with soapy water. The cramps started and we extreme. I asked her to stop and she explained that I must take the whole bag, and coached me to take deep breaths. I told her that I could not take anymore, the contractions were extreme and the cramps from the enema. She rubbed my abdomen and continued to coach me. After several minutes the bag was empty and I was doing my damnnest to keep everything in. The nurse turned me over and put me on the bedpan, and had me expel. The aide stayed with me until I was finished. The nurse came back a while later and they gave me another very large enema.

What I would like to do to the two of them is shove a large nozzle up their butt and fill them full of water

Trina,

So sorry to hear about your ordeal. At least in my case I was spared having to use a bedpan after the two HHH enemas.

Not being able to have children spared me from the horror of the labor prep. I have been shaved and bowel prepped several times for major surgeries . The enemas / suppositories were bad , both nothing compared to the complete pubic shave . I am talking belly button to back bone . I was put on an incline, frog positioned, side with knee drawn up, and spread eagle on my back as well as my tummy. So exposed .
And try getting shaved while holding in not 1 , but 2 , Dulcolax suppositories . It was all I could do not to explode !
