This is why I advise everyone who DOES buy used equipment to handle it ONLY with gloves until such time as you can put it in a solution of bleach and water and disassemble it fully in the bleach and water mixture. Once you have thoroughly cleaned it in that bleach water mixture, then rinse repeatedly until you can no longer smell the bleach, then let it dry thoroughly before using it.

You do these things, and used equipment is as safe as the day it was made.

The bleach does not have to be Clorox, but do check the label and make sure it is the same concentration as Clorox. If it's not, reduce the water or increase the bleach accordingly. Just know what you're getting!

I've always used a Clorox solution on anything I thought might be contaminated. The old enema gear was so superior to what is made today that I buy old stuff when I can. Getting an old syringe with the old black nozzels is a real find. I've used a procedure very much like Lisa's and have never had a problem. If you have the good fortune of finding an old rubber bag in good condition be sure to store it dry and out of the heat and sun light, otherwise the rubber will crack and become useless. These things are collector items.
