Subject: A&M's baseball coach let go...this guy is a legend
For Immediate Release
Monday, May 23, 2005
COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Aggie baseball coach Mark Johnson has been relieved of his head coaching duties at Texas A&M, Director of Athletics Bill Byrne announced on Monday.
“I respect and admire Mark for his character and he has always represented Texas A&M with a great deal of class and integrity,” Byrne said. “However, our baseball program did not meet our expectations and I feel we need a change in direction.”
Texas A&M ended the 2005 season with a 30-25-1 overall record and finished in 9th place in the Big 12 Conference with a final league mark of 9-18.
“I am as disappointed with the outcome of this season as anyone,” Johnson said. “We played a tremendous number of close games and never could relax and play to the full potential I thought we had. I am not disappointed in the effort my players put forth throughout the year. One constant was their ability to come out each game and give everything they had.”
Johnson served 21 years (1985-2005) as the head coach of the Aggies compiling an 876-433-3 (.669) record during that span at Texas A&M. He came to Aggieland in 1983 and served two years (1983-84) as an assistant coach to Tom Chandler.
In 21 seasons, Johnson led the Aggies to the NCAA playoffs on 13 occasions and nine times reached the Sweet 16. Texas A&M appeared in the College World Series in 1993 and 1999. The Aggies won the Big 12 Conference regular-season crown in 1998 and 1999 and won the Southwest Conference championship three times (1986, 1989, 1993) during his tenure.
“I am most proud of the young men who have come through our program,” Johnson explained. “The players worked hard on the baseball diamond and also handled themselves with class off of the diamond. I am proud that those young men who stayed with us through their eligibility have either graduated, or are in good academic standing.”
“We will begin a national search immediately and our goal remains Building Champions,” Byrne stated. “If we are contending for Big 12 titles, then we will be in the picture for national championships.”
