The Sunbelt, like the Southland is a Division I conference. Sunbelt plays 1A football, of a decidedly bottom-feeder variety, while Southland plays 1AA football, saving the cost of around 20 fewer scholarships per team, but losing hugely in the prestige department.

1A or 1AA pertains ONLY to football. Otherwise, division one is division one.
