Author: Someone who never really paid attention - until now
Subject: How will the Dallas Cowboys impact UTA Football?

I hate to sound like the resident naysayer or a selfish jerk, but I have to ask:

What exactly can the Dallas Cowboys do for UTA? Why are certain Arlington officials pursuing this $327 million venture, when they never even considered putting that much time and effort into UTA? Isn't UTA their native son? Does not UTA deserve that kind of attention? How far will the Dallas Cowboys overshadow the UTA Mavericks?

City officials said that it will help our economy and boost civic pride. I'll have to call them out for this one. I am almost sure that $327 million spent in any direction would boost the economy. That isn't really saying much. But what is speaking louder and louder is the fact that the Texas Rangers made the same promise to us years ago. New business, yea, yea, yea.

Now, we are asking the Dallas Cowboys to fix the neighborhoods that the Texas Rangers were supposed to fix. The dilapidated area south of I-30 and West of Hwy 360.

Well, guess what - it's industrial and there a giant friggin' train that make its rest there daily. Of course it looks like garbage, of course it became ghetto, of course it's unsightly. What would you expect?

I'll tell you what I expect. New business and a higher standard. There better be some major corporations moving in here. Otherwise, there will no spectacular views from the Goodyear blimp during Gametime and they'll still be giving credit to Dallas.

Oh wait - It is still going to be the DALLAS cowboys, isn't it?

Then my vote is this - Dallas can stay Dallas. And if Arlington has $327 million in available funds and is looking for a competitive football team and a surge in economic interest and civic pride, then they can invest that $327 million into their own native son, UTA.

Or once again, the hope for football at UTA will be lost. And again, Arlington will be stepchild of Texas, stepchild of the Metroplex, and second bitch to TCU, and the Dallas Mavericks. Even our only town newspaper is just a subsidiary to the one in Fort Worth.

What will we have to call our own?

Here is 27,000 students, 10,000 faculty and staff, and 70,000 alumni. If the leaders of Arlington were to invest even half of their time, talent, energy or interests in what they've already got - they could really shape things differently.

Or by the choices made in the past to cultivate a commuter school and build bridges between Arlington, the city of, and it's only son and having never taken pride in what once had promise only to fill the already fattened pockets of a few - Arlington will deprive and suffocate itself. The skinny, shredded remains of a college once led by inspiration, in the true spirit of the Maverick, will be nothing more than an outpaced, outdated principle of loyalty and stewardship.

I confide in you Arlington, my people, my only wish. Love me, UTA, your only son, as you have loved yourselves. Remember what you teach is greater by your own actions. Reach inside to find that beacon of light, that is UTA, and let it be a beacon of hope. Let it be the message you always wanted to send.

And the think of the reward that investing $327 million on an improved football stadium and new basketball coliseum (also used for city conventions), renaming Cooper Street or Center Street to University Drive, the development of a real University Park, the joint development of a world-class Museum of Texas History or Natural History, and finally connecting UTA to downtown, whereby creating a bona fide University District full of downtown commerce and visitors who will appreciate and respect you for your commitment, and your culture and who won't abandon you for selling out.

Dear Arlington,

Take care of your own, no one else can do that for you.

If this letter doesn't work, then in five years I'll be writing this letter:

Dear Arlington,

Thank you for raping us, pillaging our town and otherwise blundering any opportunity for real growth at UTA. Please leave us just our intramural parking lots that we can use for cricket. Sincerely, UT Asia
