Following Southeastern Louisiana’s dismantling of sixth-ranked McNeese State, 51-17, Saturday night in Lake Charles, the Lions got another pleasant surprise Monday earning a top-25 Division I-AA national ranking.

Southeastern, which has played only 14 games since restarting football following the program’s discontinuation after the 1985 season, was ranked 25th in the Sports Network poll, 17th by Don Hansen’s Weekly Football Gazette, 25th in the AGS poll and was rated 21st in the Sagarin Ratings by Jeff Sagarin. Overall in the Sagarin ratings, Southeastern was the 132nd ranked team in both I-A and I-AA combined and is rated above nine I-A schools including Louisiana-Lafayette and Tulane.

Following a 5-7 season in 2003, the Lions have blown out of the gate in 2004 with a 2-0 record, scoring 97 points in two games and lead the nation in total offense with 641.5 yards per game.

Most of that yardage, predictably, comes through the air courtesy of head coach Hal Mumme’s vaunted Air Raid offense triggered by sophomore quarterback Martin Hankins.

Hankins has thrown for a remarkable 1,027 yards through two games with nine touchdown passes, no interceptions and one rushing TD. His favorite target has been Zachary native Felton Huggins who leads the nation in receiving yardage averaging 250.5 yards per game.

The Lions will visit Texas State on Saturday for another game against a future conference opponent before returning home to host SLC-member Sam Houston State, Oct. 2 in Strawberry Stadium.
