My dd has had bunions (both feet) since she started dancing at the age of 15. She is suppose to wear a bunion regulator splint at night to help prevent it from getting worse. She tapes her feet with strips of athletic tape over the bunion to support the area during toe stands and ALWAYS uses a sponge toe spacers between big toe and 2nd to maintain correct alignment. You can also use the gel ones it just doesn't feel right to her.
There are apparently two kinds of bunions and luckily her's seem to have gotten as bad as they are going to get. There is a surgery to correct the bunion but it is painful and the dancer is out for 6 months or more. She is now 21 and a pre-lim dancer. I would recommend Corr's hard shoes as they have padding for the whole foot. Hullachan's Pro for soft shoe although finding a pair to fit the wide toe area can be a challenge.
