Hi, I've herniated the disc between L5-S1 (in the lumbar - lower portion - of my back). I danced for 10 years, and they're not sure if that is what started it. After dancing, I began rowing, so that probably played a role in it too. I had to take a few months off from rowing both times, and went through physical therapy as well. The important thing is to give the herniated portion of the disc time to heal, which may mean taking off time now. I understand this is not a pleasant possibility -TRUST ME, I bawled my eyes out both times. But think about your future too - if you don't let it heal, you may wind up screwing up your back forever. I hope you won't need surgery, but it will depend upon the severity of your herniation.
I am not a doctor, I've just been in your shoes, and want you to think about your FUTURE, not just this year and making it to prelim. If you do have to take time off from dancing, do what you can to stay in shape and keep your leg strength (stationary bikes are good, sometimes those elliptical things can help too - they don't jar your joints, but you still get good workouts). But good luck, and know that you WILL get through this!
