I don't know definately what would have caused that much swelling... but I do know of a few treatments that would help to get rid of some of the swelling.
There is a treatment called manual lymph drainage, that I know most massage therapists know how to do... look around and see if there is any in your area that do.
You can also try what is called contrast hydrotherapy. You are going to have 2 towels and 2 buckets of water, one hot and one ice cold. wet one towel with each... 3 minutes of the hot one on your ankle and 1 minute with the cold one. Repeat this 3 times. It really does help to get rid of some of the swelling. What is does basically is flush all the garbage out of the area.
I am guessing that the swelling was just from overdoing it.
