Subject: Temperature taken just before the doctor was called Author: Tom [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: Saturday, January 22, 2011, 11:38: am The procedure was always the same growing up.If I was sick,mom would take me into her bedroom.I was layed down on the big bed on my stomach.My pajama bottoms and underpants would be pulled down to my knees and she would take my rectal temperature.I would feel her thumb and forefinger part my buttocks and the cool,Vaseline coated thermometer would be slowly inserted up my rectum.Mom would check her watch as she keept a hand on my bottom to keep me still on my stomach.Once enought time had passed,she would pluck it from my tingling bottom and hold it up to the light to read the temperature.She would then pick up the phone on her night stand and dial the doctor as I lay there.The doctor's nurse would be told how high my "rectal temperature" was and any other symptioms my mother noted.I would have butterflies in my stomach as I listened and wondered what the doctor would have to "Do when I got here".When mom was finished she would pull up my underpants and pajamas and tell me to "Take a bath for the Doctor".Got forbid you were not clean when he came.Once the doctor came and made small talk with mom,by bottom was bared for his rectal thermometer and usually a shot. In hindsight I now realize what was going on when the doctor made house calls. For me, they were quick and abrupt. Never thought much about it at the time, but now I realize the doctor was simply in a hurry to get through all his house calls. Mom would indeed take my temperature before the doctor arrived. When the doorbell rang I could hear the doctor talking to my mother. He would be asking her all the questions like, temperature, symptoms, when it started, etc. The exam would take all of 10 seconds, quick look in the throat, quick listen with the scope then 80% of the time it was roll over and the pants would be down and before I knew it OUCH! right in the butt. The doctor would be walking out before I even got to pull my pants up and would be giving mom instructions (rest, fluids, call if not better in 3 days etc.) as he was walking to the door. Oh well, I guess somethings never change, but at least I got the rush treatment in the privacy of my own home instead of being dragged to the doctors for the privilege. The doctor would arrive and Take my temperature again to see if it changed and usually it resulted in a shot in the bottom and suppositories very four hours. My mother would also check me again to see if the fever went down. The doctor or nurse would call in the morning and see how I was. Sometimes he would come bye and another shot was given. If you was sick, Mom took rectaly temp and call to doctor. Before doctor's visit you got bath or, at least, sponge bath. In this cases any respect of your modesty was turn off. Usually I bathed myself since about 10, but here, before doctor's visit Mom washed all parts of my body herself. I recall last sponge bath Mom gave me when I had high temp at about 15. Our doctor was efficient and thorough and ended his house call the same way. Taking my temperature rectally while he prepared a shot. He'd part my butt cheeks to read the mercury and then jab the needle in my butt before removing the thermometer. She knew what had to be done but knew we would fuss so the doctor conversation was just to reinforce the remedy. I am sure many of the times no one was on the other end of the line. She would say before hanging up; "thank you Dr I will give marc an enema as soon as we hang up" I was panic stricken as she said " honey the dr said you need an enema" I remember one time I was about 16 and I was really plugged up and tried to hide it from her but somehow mothers intuitionkicked in and I knew iwas doomed. I was able to talk her into letting me stay home from school the nextday and asked if she would wait until everyone was out of the house for more privacy. She agreed but told me I would have to go to school at noon.well i tries my damnest to go #2 but no such luck.I was hoping to show her a big result in the toilet. I went to bed and as promised the next morningafter everyone left she came into my room and gently woke me up (I was playing possum) and told me it was time. Like a condemned prisoner i slowly walked down the hall to the bathroom and assumed our normal position on the towel that was already laid in the tub. The bulging enema bag was hanging in its position awaiting to do its job. I big plastic pitcher of warm soapy water was on thecounter for enema #2. In came mom and without a word the nozzle was lubed and into my butt it went. I cringed as I waited for the familiar "click" as the warm soapy water made its way into me. Mom would close the clamp a few times during the enema to give me amuch needed break. The soap stung a little and sometimes the water was a little too warm. Finally the last of the bag would drain into me and the click told me I wasdone with enema #1. The enemas were repeated until mom was satisfied. Then j took a shower and momdropped me at school.at dinner that night my brothers asked why I came toschool late and mom told them to nevermind. they knew but didn't push it because they knew they could be the next victim. It was common in our neighborhood to see an enema bag hanging in the main bathroom ready for use. I can remember going in my friend Bills house and could hear his brother crying and the bathroom door shut. I would say hey Bill is your mom giving Chris an enema? We would laugh and then think that either of us could be next. Enemas were given for everything from a sore throat to a headache. Mom told her to go into her bedroom. Once, I'm in the bathroom, mom closes the door and I had to lay over the closed toilet led (a towel over it.) Mom makes me spread my legs and then she begins the enema. After I'm through, I take a bath. Mom brings in my PJ's. I put them on and go back to bed to await the doctor. When Mum wasn't sure if I had a fever, out came the Rectal thermo, and if there was fever, then remedy one was attempted (the enema series), the temoprature was rechecked after a suitable period (2 hours or so) and if fever had persisted, Then the doctor was called. and the whole scenario reviewed, along with any other symptoms; and depending on the doctor I may have been dressed and hauled off for a visit. Parents were very paranoid about child health at that time because polio was still rampant (the vaccine hadn't been distributed to 1954 or so), and most of the childhood maladies (i.e. measles, mumps and chickenpox) were not preventable.a large number of these are now vaccinated against. They actually were laughing and finding it funny as I was freaking out. The period after the swab of alcohol was the moment of truth because I knew that needle was going to be jabbed in any second. And it TRULY hurt. It was the old fashioned large reusable type. You felt that entire needle inside of you and it stung like crazy. When the medicine went in, that's when the pain went way over the top and I could feel a fire inside my butt. And it wasn't fast. It was a lot of medicine and the burning kept increasing as it went in. As I screamed the rest of the family laughed. When it was done all I could do was lay there for a half hour crying with my ass still on fire. I then stayed in my room for the rest of the night not moving at all because it hurt so much. ....There were many many crazy stories of me getting those shots and some were done by trickery.
