In reply to: Bella 's message, "did anyone ever" on Sunday, August 14, 2011, 09:23: pm

Here's my take on this...regardless of the fact that the doctor was a family friend, and the other circumstances etc., I find it hard to think that any physician treating a sick child or teen would not have a problem with a parent administering any kind of physical corporal punishment. To me, and I could be way off here, but it seems the part of the physicians' oath, ...to "do no harm" would not let him in good conscience watch and not suggest such behavior by a parent/guardian would not be acceptable to him/her. Just my humble opinion.

Rich, I would have to agree with you considering our culture these days. Bella didn't specify when her event occurred, however. I grew up in the 1950-60s & corporal punishment was a fact of life then. More than once, I heard a child threatened with a spanking for resisting whatever medical treatment was about to be administered, often a shot.

Somewhat off topic: My father was military & we moved to Virginia Beach in 1961. Corporal punishment was the norm in public schools there. Usually it meant paddling a student's upturned palm with a double-thickness Smokey Bear ruler. However, paddling of backsides with a yardstick happened once in my sixth grade class. One boy & one girl were the recipients. In high school, the assistant principal was the only one who administered spankings. My brother was admonished in about 1995 when he publoicly swatted the backside of his mouthy 13yo son in the parking lot of the military exchange on a US base in Okinawa.

I agree wituh Walt. First, back when doctors made house calls, spankings were pretty universal. Second, the doctor apparently thought the injection was important for the child's health, so certainly a few swats on the child's backside was a small price to pay if it was going to lead to what he felt was needed. Third, a busy doctor does not want to wait 15 or 30 minutes while a parent tried to beg, bribe, or argue a stubborn child into cooperating. Fourth, it is only recently that society and the government has come to the conclusion it has a "right" to tell parents how to raise their children. So even if the doctor disagreed with the spanking, he wasn't likely to interfer, not if he wanted to continue being their physicain.
