I want to come back to school physicals since some of you are interested and there is no more a specific discussion like it was some years ago !
I would like to read relations of group sports physicals in the united states at a time of the past where the privacy of boys even teenagers was not an issue.
I have had myself during childhood and teenagehood always at least one mandatory physical exam each year at school, both middle school and high school, and we could not skip them since they were mandatory, a visit to a private doctor was not available for the school, we might be examined by the school doctor assisted always by the permanent school nurse, often assisted by a young student nursing in first year ( 18 to 20 age)who could assist to the exams and take notes, or even helped the nurse for weighting for instance or reading a chart for the eyes test, and who was learned how to proceed for all exams by the nurse and the school doctor, who was always a woman except the first year of middle school and especially for all the years at high school from 14 to 17 age. But I personnally was not much embarrassed to be examined by a woman doctor than by a man doctor, she was the same for all years of high school, a woman aged about fourty.
It was not the only exams that you had as a pre-teenager or a teenager because other exams were required before summer camp or to practice sport outside the school, or for the entrance of some schools, especially boarding schools or for those who were apprentices at entrance.
I would talk about them an other time.
Today I will talk only of school physicals.
The set up was always the same, to come half a class, about 15 boys, in a locker room adjoining the exam room under supervision of a male PE teacher, rather strict about the obedience of boys. We were instructed by him immediately as soon as we entered to strip until white tight briefs all together, to put our clothes on hooks and line up in front of the door of the exam room and wait. The nurse came in the room with a clip board alone or with the nursing student and she did a roll call to make us line in alphabetic order and note who was not present.
Don't ask me why she did the roll call, only after we had undressed in briefs, because I don't know ?
May be she wanted to be sure that we were obedient and quiet since it was told that boys had a better behaviour when they were undressed?
At that time I did not think about it and question her practice, I just notice that it was useless to be wearing just briefs for a roll call.
But as we were used to undress in locker rooms for gym, we were not too much embarrassed even if we felt that we were almost naked and after the first year we were used to that situation.
We stayed in briefs for about two hours, the needed time for all boys to be examined, since we were called one by one in the exam room, but once our exam finished and coming back in the locker room, we were not allowed to dress again, we might wait that all boys had been examined and then everybody dressed again all together like for undressing!
So we can say that it was like a group exam for undressing and after a single exam.
Apart of our white briefs, we did not wear anything since we might remove our socks also to be bare feet and our watches or any other jewelleries.
We could sit on benches to wait our turn and stand to come near the door when we were the next to be examined undr instruction of the Pe teacher ..
Once called in the exam room, we had some exams like eyes test, ears test, measure of height and so on.. performed by the permanent nurse.
But very soon , we might remove our brief and strip naked completely since it was the rule for the weigh-in ( don't ask me why since I doubt that a brief changed sometghing in the result on the scale but it was stadard procedure as said the nurse, boys might be weighted each year in the nude.
So I was instructed by the nurse to remove my brief and to put it on a small bench along the wall and I came to stand in front of the scale stark naked feeling the eyes of the doctor, and the nursing student fixed on my naked buttocks.
Sometimes I climbed up normally on the scale, but if I was too reluctant like first year of high school to remove my brief under instruction of the nurse, then she gave me a loud slap on the butt to instuct me to climb up on the scale and same to climb down, which made giggle the nursing student.
After, all the examination was performed while I was naked. So I stayed naked for a least five minutes.
Then I had a check of gait for which I might walk a little in the room in the buff, then a check of spine standing back to the doctor first while the doctor slided hrer finfers all along my spine from neck to the cleft of the butt, then bending over and touching toes while the doctor pattted slightly my back. She performed other checkings for reflexes or listening heart and lungs and so on.
At the beginning we had also each year a blood test and a urine test in a small bathroom without door where we might pee.
Then to end the exam, it was the dreadful inspection of genitals with retraction of the penis by the doctor to check if I have not a phimosis, palpation of balls, exam of scrotum and opening of the penis and so on .. and a hernia test the famous cough and turn the head which was a regular practice.
It was quite the same set up and exams during all school years from the first at middle school to the last at high school.
Of course you have understood that no parents were invited to come at school physicals, there was only the PE teacher who could if he wanted enter in the exam room but he did it only one year the first of high school, it was more embarrassing because he could see us being examined and he left the door partially opened to be able to see if we did not move or talk, we might stay silent except to answer to questions of the doctor..
It was certainly an old way to proceed wioth boys aged from 11 to 17 but it left me a vivid memory and it seemed rather normal at that time, even the part of the examination naked
